I just purchased the battallion starter box, a unit of grave guard, and a vampire lord. I was just wondering if these units weould be enough for 750 pt games for now. In addition I was wondering if the units in the box set are useful at all? Tips on what units to get next? Thanks alot for your time in advance.

Welcome to VC!! You will use the contents of the Battalion set, however some of it not outright. Do not pay points for zombies, raise them during the game. I would personaly add some more Ghouls to make at least a unit of 20 (some prefer skeletons over Ghouls, however I believe most people use Ghouls more). Ghouls have 2 poisoned attacks each (the ghast has 3). Grave Guard are your heavy hitters. Give them a full command with the Banner of the Barrows (gives all Wights a +1 to hit). Use your Skeletons with full command and give your Vampire some powers and equipment (only use a Vampire hero in a 750 point game).
This should get you up to 750! I didn't get super specific but I believe this would make a good foundation for an army. In the future I would add another unit of Ghouls, more Grave Guard and a Wight King to use as a BSB with the Drakenhof Banner. The Black Coach and Vargulfs are also very useful. I generally use Ghouls, Skeletons as a bunker for my vampire, Grave Guard, a Wight King, an occasional Necromancer for magic support, the Black Coach and Vargulfs. I do pretty well in my battles.
Good Luck and have fun!

Thanks for the information. Would you say that zombies are useless? Would it be good to make say a 40 man horde? Last what do you think of the blood knights?

Blood Knights can be very good but require some experience to use in 8th edition.
Zombies.. meh... not worth their points..they can't hurt anything and do nothing.. and you can summon them for free!

I agree. The Raise Dead spell is great at getting to screw up your opponents plans as they pop up within 12 inches of the caster.
I have heard Blood Knights can be good, but I don't use cavalry much in 8th (I have a ton of Black Knights sitting around!).

So zombies can be summoned without paying points to have them at the start? Also would it be a good idea to horde the skeleton warriors?

No. You must raise the zombies during the game. Zombies don't do much of anything and are considered by most to be a waste of points that can be used better elsewhere.
I don't use skeletons a whole lot so I will let someone else chime in about them!

I'm also new to Vampire Counts and I'm using Mantic Games miniatures mostly.
With two army sets, some extra ghouls, and the wraith set releasing this month I will have:
80 Skeletons with 2x Command
40 Grave Guard with 2x Command
60 Ghouls
60 Zombies
10 Cairn Wraiths
Given a couple of vampire models, are there any big units missing from that setup? The cavalry models in general are too expensive for my tastes.

As far as having a viable army, you are not missing anything. At this point you can add units/models to your liking!
