Agreed. I wonder what would happen if FIFA and the IOC co-hosted an event.

Didn't the IOC clean up after the salt lake city scandal, i mean sepp blatter is on that board as well so it must be OK....

If anyone saw panorama on monday that will probably answer the question (sorry US dakkites it was on the BBC, it may still be on iplayer if you're interested) that program showed that the swiss authorities conducted an investigation, found fifa guilty, but get this the documents regarding the conviction are locked up in a swiss town hall or something as fifa lawyers try to keep it suppressed.

Lets face it any organisation that sends the world cup to a country where the crowd's servants and drivers outnumber the actual crowd at most games and didn't think hmmm the middle east in summer that would be a good time and place to hold a massive outdoor sporting event has got to have been swayed somehow. And yes i am bitter because we only got 2 votes.

I was in Beijing for the Olympics and got to hear the head of the IOC on one day say 'we're just a sporting group, how can we do anything about human rights in China' and the next 'see how many reporters are here covering stories, we have definitely improved human rights in China.'

3 years later, the Birds Nest that great stadium the Chinese built for them is still standing empty with peeling paint and weeds growing in it becuase Beijing has no use for it.

After Beijing the IOC will never host an Olypmics in the US (at least not summer) because we won't build them white elephents the way the Chinese did.

Didn't I hear the Greeks crisis is partly due to Olympic debt?

I mean FIFA has its issues but I never heard of them bankrupting a country.

Best of luck to London in 2012.

*insert obvious flame about the catholic church here*

It isn't really a surprise FIFA is corrupt, they pay men millions of pounds to run around a pitch waiting for someone to get close enough to them that they can fall over and start crying after all.

As the others have said, the IOC is way more corrupt than FIFA.

Part of the Greek problem is due to Olympic debt. Sort of, the reason the Olympics didn't work for Greece is due to a failure of long term planning that's the underlying cause of the whole Greek problem in the first place.

China spent a fortune on white elephants, but you'd be really badly failing to understand Chinese motivations for hosting the games if you thought they hosted the games to get some swimming and gymnastic stadiums for future generations. The games showed China had the capability to organise major national projects. Talk about China usurping the US as the dominant nation heated up incredibly after the Beijing olympics. China got exactly what they were after.

Another country that did very well out of the games was Sydney, the boost to tourism and world awareness was immense. And that's really the secret to the games, if you have a greater strategic goal and you organise the games very well, they're a great. If you lack either of these (or in the case of Greece, lack both) then the games will be an expensive boondoggle.

I have no idea if London will gain anything from their games. I do know that lots of countries believe they stand to gain a lot from hosting the games. That's why there's always so many countries lining up to host them, with ever increasing bids. If they weren't worth so much potentially, the scale of the bids would decrease to a point where they were worth it.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

FIFA is a sickening organisation. I'd be happy to see us boycott a few world cups. It's not like we're going to win them anwyay

Its getting better and better... those fething snakes want burning, and all this hubub is just vindicating the English FA who moaned about the bastards a few months back.

Not that the English FA aren't corrupt either, but at least they don't proper kick the arse out if it!

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.
