Correct me if I'm wrong, but GW minis are generally a little larger than 1/72 scale. Does anyone have any experience of how well kits in 1/72 look next to GW's 28-32mm models? I'm thinking mainly about vehicles, where 40K vehicles are much smaller than they would be in 'real life' as it were.

Somewhere in south-central England.

1/72 is tiny compared to GW models.

You should look at 1/48 or 1/35.

Here is a comparison chart.

I believe most GW models are 1/35 heroic scaled.
In other words, they are roughly 2x the size of 1/72 scale models.

The heroic scale also means that some proportions are exaggerated namely heads, guns and hands, so they don't really fit in well even with regular 1/35 scale models.

hope this helps

Hmm, I've been gravely misinformed. Glad I checked first! Thanks for the link.

28mm scale is equivalent to approximately 1/60. GW's stuff used to be 28mm 'heroic' (ie a deformed anatomy to make stuff look good on table), but in later years scale creep has taken it closer to 30mm (or about 1/55).

The deformation basically makes the hands almost 1/35 (and thus accessories). 1/35 tank accessories work very well, but you'll find that 1/35 terrain is way too large. 1/48 stuff will look tall and spindly, but in terms of seating (ie for kitbashing aircraft) about 1/48 is where you want to look.

Ah, that's useful to know, winterdyne, one of the projects I'm asking in regard to is a scratchbuilt Thunderbolt, but I'd like some details to set it off.

Some 1/72 scale (and similarly model railway HO/OO scale) stuff can be usable, especially generic items like boxes/crates/barrels and trees which don't have such an obvious scale, but nearly all vehicles look too small. Worth keeping an eye out for sales at your local model shop - e.g. a cheap truck kit may be a great source of wheels.
