I am having a hard time choosing a space marine chapter to build up. I just acquired a boat load of metal marine models in a trade, when I say boat load I mean I weighed the box they came in and it weighed nearly 11 lbs. I have all but one space marine codex, I am missing the dark angels codex, but I am having a hard time choosing a chapter. Every chapter has things I like and things I don't like. It's a hard choice. I have been thinking about choosing a chapter based on the color scheme, something simple, because my lack of painting ability. How did you guys choose a chapter? Please give me advise.
Is it stupid to choose a chapter based on the color? Blue is my favorite color and I was thinking about building an Ultra-smurf army because they are blue.
It also kind of sucks because I want to build an army that you don't see very often, something notable but unique at the same time. (If that makes any sense)...

Colour is a perfectly good reason to choose a chapter- most play the same so colour is the only difference anyway.
If you like blue but don't want UM you could make a chapter with a similar colour scheme. Just change a few of the colours or icons.

Flick through the chapter gallery on the GW website, see what you like.
As for actual rules, look at the various chapter tactics for chapter masters, and see which would appeal to you playstyle most.

I picked one based on color initially and I can say DON'T DO THAT! I'm going from snot green to golden yellow now and it's a huge headache. I'd borrow/download each codex and play as each type to find which best suits your playstyle. I'd recommend picking a leader you like most. Best of luck to you.

You don't have to match the colour and the playstyle / leader. You can have a green Calgar or an orange pedro kantor if you want. GW themselves have said that counts as is ok.

If you like blue but don't want Ultramarines, go with Storm Wardens! They are mostly blue, although they use lots of vehicles and armored elements, I don't know how much that appeals to you. Based on cool/uniqueness, how about Iron Hands? You don't see them very often, plus that gives you plenty of converting and modeling opportunities.

Just picking a colour scheme worked for me. Ended up with a chapter of my own.

Nope. I like the Warriors Adept because of their color scheme and Chapter symbol. They have almost no fluff, so it purely an aesthetics choice.
Some people choose a Chapter because of the fluff, some because of their color or iconagraphy, and some choose a mix of the two. What ever you decide you like, go for it.

An excellent suggestion as well. Again, go with what you'll enjoy the most.
If you still would like the communities help choosing a chapter, then I suggest narrowing it down to handful of Chapters and then ask the community which of the 2-5 Chapters they like best.

I'd do a bit of research on which ones fit your play style the best. Or if you don't have one yet, or just don't have preferences, see which one you agree with in terms of their quirks and protocol. I got lucky with the Salamanders, since I love green, I like their penchant for incendiary weapons, and their fluff and general disposition just strikes a note with me. If all else fails, then do what others have said and just make up your own. Whatever you pick, it should turn out fine.

In the list of Space Marine chapters there are many that have no visual data at present. So if you want one that was a name "Chapter Approved" and then you can paint it how you would like.

See my problem is that I haven't played that many games nor have played that long to actually have a play style. Is there a chapter that is a "jack of all trades, master of none" a chapter I can play around with and try different play styles?

Yeah, they are called the Ultramarines...
If you don't want to collect them just paint them a slightly different shade of blue and call them the "Azure Knights" or something similar...

That's what I started doing. Even made them an Ultramarines successor chapter. SHAMELESS. Didn't follow through though, just did a squad and a dreadnought.
OP: There're a whole bunch of chapters out there without much fluff at all. If you wanted to, you could attach your own fluff to a pre-existing chapter, making both your own, part of the universe, and unusual. The playstyle isn't so much of an issue if you don't want it to be. Just paint them a colour you like and use the codex you want. 99% of people won't care if you have blue blood angels or green spacewolfs. A lot of people switch between codices, it's not hard since mos of the equipment is the same.
