I've been wanting to play IG for a while, and I finally took the plunge. I paid $175 for about $920 worth of stuff, including two Leman Russ, two Chimaeras, three Sentinels, ten Commissars, five Plasma Men, five Melta Men, one Flamer Man, eight Lascannon Weapon Platforms, 20 Unknown things (to me atleast), twelve sergeants, nine Vox Caster, and ninety-two lasgun guardsmen. I played one game, where I won. I want to go mech simply because I love tanks, but I see that I have the materials to do a horde guardsmen list too. What should I do?

Once you go track, you never go back.

Seems like you've got the makings of being able to field either type of army there. I say pick which ever's easiest to build to begin with, and then slowly build up a force of the other type.

Kudos on the bargain, there.

I really don't know what the unknown things are. When I get home I can take a picture and post it here. For now, they are guardsmen standing up. They lack a right arm, but the left arm is sticking straight out. It's a fist at the end, looking like it is holding some short rod in the fist. He obviously didn't want to do whatever the right arm was. I have a whole box of sprues, but I don't even know what is supposed to be in the right arm.

They are guardsmen\veterans carrying special weapons (meltagun, plasmagun, flamer or granade launcher). The short rod is the handle, which should fit in a hole in the weapon itsels (your sprues probably carry the latter two, as they almost surely are from shock troopers/catachan j. fighters boxes, not command squad ones, which also carry melta, plasma and heavy flamer), which is gripped in the right hand. The guy/gal you bought them for maybe intended to magnetize them, to chose the sw as battle needs and point limits dictate.

I'm really happy with my purchase, after an even more careful inspection of the parts. Thinking of a solid paint scheme for these guys is going to be tough, IG style is totally different than Chaos and Tyranids...

I would say put storm troopers in chimeras and have the guardsmen and tanks with command squads following them around, gives you both mech and horde abbility

Stormtroopers are pretty useless for their points value, their best use is as a suicide melta to kill an enemy tank as soon as they deepstrike.
Mech is having a list where a large part of your force is mechanised, not only a few squads.

Who ever told you that army is worth $920 might have tried to scam you. Though the price you actually bought at is good

What you should do is pick a theme and stick with it, it will be easier on your wallet and will save you the frustration of changing your army when you realize you're not playing the particular flavour you'd enjoy most.

Guard are really diverse when it comes to the list building stage, there are a lot of competitive builds and even the not so competitive units can be made to work if the player is up for a challenge. Writing themed lists is also a lot of fun.

To be fair, STs do that rather well.
And if you team them up with Marbo, they can be a pain.

Sounds vaguely to me, like he has some unfinished mortar team members.. though pictures would help greatly for that.

What is the general consensus on the Hellhound, Devil Dog, and Banewolf? They are really cool models and the effects don't seem half bad either. The Hellhound seems meh against MEHREEENS, but the devil dog and the bane wolf seem pretty kick ass.

Powerful units are veterans with special weapons in chimeras, and combined infantry squads of 20-30 with special weapons and a commissar. Either of these units can be the basis for an army, or you can combine them.

The bane wolf is a good marine killer with a ap of 3 and wounds on 2+ and templates but you still have to get it up to the squad, the devil dog is good because of the range of the melta cannon

I'm not saying they don't, they are a great suicide squad but apart from that they don't do much else...

Hellhound's actually the better of the three. Banewolf too short ranged, it probably gets one shot before dying and there are better ways to get melta than Devil Dog.
