Drone without a Controller

Hey Dakka, just had a question for all of you, particularly those who happen to play other tabletop games, not necessaries 40k.

Seeing as how Kroot hounds are $15 for two, and my army lists often want to include 16+, the price for them is a little bit (an epic crap-ton -bit) expensive. I can't afford to spend $252 on 18 little dogs.

So I was wondering what good stand-ins for them would be? Preferably something I can buy in mass; like squads of 6-10 or something.

I was already given 5 Wolfs that work, see below...

The real Kroot Hounds:

I was given

Only without the goblins. The wolfs come by themselves, and the places where the Goblins sit actually has fur, so it looks fine without them. I don't think I would actually buy these new though, as 10 for $35 is still on the very pricey end...

I know the Wargs from LotR are a good match, but GWs prices are just a lot of bit too much for me, so I was wondering if there is an alternative from another game?

I've seen one guy take some gaunts and model some kind of collar on them. He then took one of the tau pilots and made him into a "controller". I though it was a cool idea.

Our only hope is that when Tau get rehashed, a box of Kroot will include a couple hounds with it. Plastic hounds.

I use Chaos Warhounds rather than the metal hounds. They fit fine on the small bases, and when painted like the kroot they go with they look fine. Just shave off some of the more 'chaosy' parts and you're good to go. Its a pretty cheap alternative, and tourney legal as they are GW models.

Sometimes, you just gotta take something cause the model is freakin cool...

Or what I do, is get GW ghouls from Vampire Counts, and replace the heads with Kroot Carnivore heads. Simples!

I'm also interested in this as the metal kroot hounds would now be Out of production with the changes to resin, and since resin kroot haven't been made yet it would be hard to get. These alternatives sound good so far.
