Are scratchbuilt models field legal? I know conversions are all good as long as they are X % GW product, but if you make your model out of household materials, then is it legal?

Legal in what sense?

Most tournaments require GW models. Some tournaments allow the "rule of cool". Friendly games, just check with your opponent.

2,500 - Discipline. Duty. Unyielding Will.
2,000 - He alone has the Emperor's soul in his blood.
2,500 - Order. Unity. Obedience.

It really depends on what it's supposed to be, as well as where you are that your trying to use it. Most tournies, not likely. I don't know what this "rule of cool" is but it sounds pretty straight forward (and the coolest to go with). Lensherr is right about friendly games too, just ask.

Don't know which tournies you guys go to...but the big tournies around the western US:
Quake City Rumble
Saws Challenge
Grand Waaaaagh
Alamo GT

as well as all the smaller tournies have no problem with Scratch Builts or Non GW models.
I regularly use non GW models and scratch built unit fillers (I have an all Rackham ork army that I played in Saws and QCR) and have never been turned away

It really depends what you're doing dude.

If you make a monstrous creature out of a bottle cap and tooth pick - then you are taking massive advantage of the size of the 'new model'.

Make sure the model looks awesome (its not a shoe box replacing a chariot) and is the same scale as the original model and you should be fine.

GW has to allow appropriate conversions, otherwise half their army books would be invalidated. Just make sure it looks close to what it should be, and is partially GW product (you can have a 100% green stuffed model-as GW does make green stuff).

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Depend on the moddel, if you are talking about certain monsters, as some of the creatures have no GW moddel out at this time, I say that scratch build are okay, I like seeing what people build to represent for instance a Ghorgon or a Jabberslythe

I don't see anything wrong with scratchbuilds or conversions. If you are going to a tournament you should check with the organizers or tournament rules. Bottlecap with a stick works too with me as long as you aren't trying to get advantage with that.

If someone goes to the trouble of scratchbuilding something, even if it is a totally new creation, I for one will not give them any grief about it, as long as the rules aren't too OTT.
Usually the types who say you can't use it are WAACjobs who perceive some disadvantage being imposed by your use of a non standard model/unit.

But if you bought it as green stuff from a FLGS, you technically bought a GW product.

I'd say check again-GW models it under "citadel hobby supplies" and I happen to know this because my friend has a container of it sitting on his work station. They do actually supply their own green stuff to the hobby. Theirs is just in strips, rather than the cheaper tube option

That's Polymeric's product repackaged under the GW label.

Although if someone is going to be that nit picky, I would point out that GW doesn't make their own plastic (or metals).

Depends on the tourney. Check with the TO
I know someone that was DQed because of Greenstuff work in a GW only because he wasn't willing to pull an arm off to prove it was GS instead of another modeling compund.
