So the owner of my LSG has recently asked me if i would like to start hosting/ host a 40k tournement for their store, i play there quite alot, and are pretty well known as the cream of the crop most would say, though im not TFG

Probably around a $10-$15 buy in, registration opens around somewhere like 8:30 and games will start roughly 9:30 we can stay until around 9pm so HEAPS of time

Winner would take 40% of the pot, second 20% and third would take 10%, that should average about if it is $15 like 130 for third? which i thought was pretty good, i was thinking about making it in store credit for the shop.

Also to draw more people into the store, everyone that enters the tournement would recieve 5-10% off war40k products for the day, maybe a cool idea

Posted Rules

So i was probably thinking it would run about 1500 points.

All models must have atleast 3 different types of paint on them.

WYSIWYG

10 minute turns.

no victory points being used, what so ever.

no proxy models obviously.

Granted rules

Models would not allowed to be based with excessive height, modeling advantage.

Models without an actual designated model must be within reasonable stacture.

So i was thinking that we could email everyone on their mailing list, post it up on facebook, and also have posters around the store, also word of mouth, it could draw alot of people, and as for those tricky questions i will print out all the FAQ for each race and the general ones.

So thoughts? things you think would be good? All comments are welcome, im just trying to make this as best as possible.

Thanks !

10 minute turns? Everything else is fine, but that's a bit too little. It gives a massive advantage to mech armies against foot ones. I would just do a time limit for each game, maybe 1.5-2 hours?

Looks fairly solid.
Will you be using the standard missions or do you have something shiny in store?

Problem with this is that a horde player can eat the clock up by taking too long and screw over elite armies. Personally, I've only played with the 2 hour game rule, and haven't had people do that, but I don't have any 40k player TFGs at my store who would eat up the clock. I'd say base it on the normal players who show up: if there are horde players who tend to take a LOT of time, then do the ten minute rule. If it doesn't seem to be a problem, do the 2 hour thing. For the first email going out and on the sign, if you have one, mention what timed-style you will use. It will make it fair so that everyone (who shows up there regularly or gets emails) knows what to plan for.

Also, I say make the rounds ahead of time doing your own pairing from the rulebook or use the Adepticon rules. Either or would be good. For my tournaments that I used to host we set up this way (forgot official names):

Round 1: Killpoints with standard 12" deployment
Round 2: Spearhead with D3+2 objectives
Round 3: Dawn of War with 2 objectives

This made sure that nobody would get stuck with bad luck every round of getting an unfavorable deployment setup: everyone knows when they will deal with each type of setup and should build lists accordingly. I NEVER had any complaints about this-in fact, everyone loved it, because before I set this up, many people were getting hit with kill points every round on dawn of war (example)

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Hey thanks for all the feedback, so people are debating on the time by the looks of it, maybe setting a rule that says if you have over X models in 1500 points, then the limit is X amount of time, or maybe just making it around 14mins per turn.

And i mght go with the above deployment because that seems fair to everyone. thanks for all the input so far.

I think 2 hour games at 1500 would be good. I have played a few 2000-2250 tournaments with 2.5 hour rounds and it was plenty of time for both mech armies and horde armies.

Thanks for the reply, Yea i think that if we have 3-4 rounds depending on the players, we could probably start at around 10am and be giving out prizes atleast at 6pm

Well, you could throw in the old card game standard of "NO stalling" stalling being defined by the judge, and up to the players to call it. Obviously this would put a lot of pressure on you should someone turn out to be TFG, or some poor sports could end up calling you out and turn your reputation into tfg. But as a host / judge, it's not your job to be liked. It's your job to keep the game fair.

Just some food for thought.

Just remember - Keep it Simple, when ever possible. You're going to be explaining set-ups and things to an entire room of people, half of which won't be listening (or pretending not to hear because they disagree with a ruling). Be prepared for someone to show up with an illegal model or list every now and again, and even worse for it not to come out until round three when he's on a top table and his opponent calls him out on it unlike his previous two. Be prepared to make hard decisions, like when someone realizes his opponent did something illegal or unfair during a game but didn't speak up, and it changed the result (classic example - one year at our store's 'ard boyz an ork player "forgot" that meganobz moved with the slow and purposeful rule -- his opponent didn't know any better and only found out he had been cheated when giving a recap of his game to a group of guys i happened to be sitting with.)

Overall just emphasize fun and hopefully the douchebaggery will not rear it's ugly head. However i fear that since you're doing a paid buy-in and money (or large amounts of store credit) you're going to see a higher than usual number of TFGs participate in your particular event. I hope that I am wrong on that account, and good luck!

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.
