OK, so I'm new to this forum, but I've been in the hobby on and off since about 1996. That's when I got my 2nd edition 40k box set. I've always loved the 40k aesthetic and I've always loved painting and basing my minis, even though I was never into the actual gaming side of it. Anyway I've been painting and modeling all that time, but never played the entire time partly because I never knew anyone else into it. I recently got Assault on Black Reach and convinced a friend to play with me, a game 15 years in the making.

Just wondering though, has anyone else had a similar experience?

About a week.

I bough AoBR and a Big Mek and put together 500pts for 3 vs 3 game - first kill was my Warboss ripping apart a Rhino

Took a couple of games to win my first game. I wasn't into the modelling or painting when I started, but I am now.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

I played WHFB in first and second edition using historical and fantasy models from not GW, which I already had.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Took me about a year to find someone else who played and collect an army and get rulebooks, and we played a 1200 point game. I won, it was Nids vs Necrons. It was great.

I first played a game using my friends Dark Angels against his Tau back at the end of 3rd or very start of 4th. Could have been early middle now that I think of it.

My first 40k related things were a couple pewter Scouts my dad's friend gave me ages ago, and then a box of Marines I picked up and customized from a local hobby store cause I always thought they looked cool.

I think that may be some sort of record...

I played with a loner army as an intro. I'm a 2nd edition guy as well. It was fun back than.

I voted for the "used someone else's army", but technically, armies didn't exist back then. It was just some random warband stuff.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

As I started with the Dark Eldar from two 3rd ed. starter boxes, I played (and lost) my first game the moment I had added an Archon and some Incubi to the existing warriors.
I added a few Raiders and had my second game...lost that one too.

I started in the middle of second edition. My first 'army' was made from the free space marine guys that came with white dwarfs. The store at Ocean City Maryland allowed me to just take a stack of them home (they were in a plastic bag with a space marine sprue. Some were captains, missile launchers, normal, etc). I took a stack of about 20 home and came back the next day all assembled and played for a couple hours there.

My brother bought like 2 boxes of of the original space hulk game iirc cause the tyranid codex had just come out. With those ugly warriors with bee stingers. I took the plastic terminators and such.

I only played marines for about a month before I moved over to Eldar though.

Hopefully I'll be able to play a lot more now.

My girlfriend agreed to learn to play with me, with one condition...She'll only play as soon as I've painted EVERY model from AOBR. Rough, considering "speed painting" for me still takes over an hour per figure.

Speaking of which: according to the fluff, are there any PINK Space Marines chapters?

Well it was a VERY small game, musta been like 250pts, but id say it counts. I picked the first option.

What is it with Girlfriends/Wives and Pink armies?...I painted up a 2000 point Slaanesh CSM army for my Missus in Pink as well, but no...I'm not aware of any SM chapters that use Pink as the color for their armor.
Of course you could just "create" a chapter.

Played "Battle for the farm" scenario in the original RT rulebook about a month after I got it with a mate. He had the ork raiders box (all metals), I had the limited SM forces allowed to me (by the scenario) from the RTB001 box.

Dunno about missuses and GFs. I never wanted to game with them and they didn't want to play my games. We had other things to do usually.

I played back in RT when I had enough to play. This would be a dozen or so mixed models.
That was before I sold them all :(

This time, I got (my only) game in a couple of months after I got my first minis.
