Hello there Dakka. I've been doing some looking and decided I want to make an army for any point size that you army builders can make (aiming at max of 2000 of course) with these two Leman Russ Squads front and center

Leman Russ Squadron 515
Leman Russ Punisher
Leman Russ Punisher
Leman Russ Vanquisher

Leman Russ Squadron 490
Leman Russ Battle Tank
Leman Russ Battle Tank
Leman Russ Executioner

My whole goal of this army is to just use the tanks to lay down the main smackdown on the opponent and I am taking suggestions for my core Leman Russ units as well! Anyone mind helping me taking this concept into fruition?

Well, Russes are well and nice, but you can't make an army out of them. You need a HQ and you need troops.

Are you going full Mech? Well, meltagun Vets in Cimeras are 155pts each and a CCS with meltaguns in a Chimera is 145pts. You can go foot sloggers, as they are cheaper. If you go with a platoon, you have to get a PCS and at least two PISs, putting all 3 in Chimera and giving every special weapon slot a melta makes them a total of 355pts. 5pts cheaper and a extra scorning unit than vet squads, but BS 3 with one group of 4 and two single shots vs two groups with 3 shots each and BS 4. If you want to attack with the Chimeras, I suggest Vets. If you just want to go sit on a Objective, then consider PISs. If you have extra points, consider plasmaguns for camping Vets.

If you go footslogger, Vets with Camo Cloaks or Grenadiers Doctrines (or both if you want) and the CCS with Camo Cloaks or Carapace armor are usally cheaper (if you go one Doctrine). But then you can add on firepower (and points) by giving them a heavy weapon and plasmaguns. Though if they are outside Chimeras, you can now look at using Orders. I would say you want to avoid a blob squad, as you want as many scoring units as possible to march on enemy objectives or defend your own. A Platoon can give you alot of fairly cheap troops to footslog with, as a basic naked 10 man squad is 50pts, 20pts cheaper than a naked Vet squad.

Since 2/3s of the game is objective based, you want more than 2 troop choices, otherwise people will just shoot your troops to prevent you from winning. Only real good thing about having 6 Russes is that the enemy might ignore your infantry/Chimeras to shoot the tanks first (if you have 4+ infantry choices).

I am not going to get invovled in the arguments that will come out on what to make your tanks. My only suggestion will be to go 3 squads of 2, so you can fire on 3 things instead of 2.

Read very carefully the Squad rules for Vehicles, as well as Ordnance rules and Lumbering Behemoth rules. Know what your getting into and that your using them right.

he's using the forgeworld metal batallion army list which is horrifically unbalanced.

I don't know about the Forgeworld rules Grundz mentions, but like BlkTom, I would mix up the units. Maybe a solo Vanquisher, 2 Punishers + LRBT, and the Executioner + LRBT. As for the rest of the army, I'd take lots of squads of basic guardsmen. You've got so many points tied up in those tanks that you need a lot of bodies/point, and that means platoons. It also means you deny mid-level weapons (autocannons, scatter-lasers) good targets.

alright well let's ammend my original six tanks breaking them into more groups and playing with some wargear options.

Total Sunk into Mech List thus far: 840

Russ Squadron 170
Vanquisher Russ
Lascannon

Russ Squadron 330
Punisher Russ
Battle Tank Russ

Russ Squadron 340
Executioner Russ
Battle Tank Russ

I took away one of the Punisher's to free up some more points. Looking at what these six Russ can provide is there anything else that I should consider a must have for this army? (besides the required units of course)
