Hi there,
I'm looking to strip all my orks. I painted them in the nineties when I was younger and just recently got them out of the attic.... They look horrific. Does anyone know of a decent product that I can get my hands on here in New Zealand? I've heard all about this L.A. something something cleaner from the states and I need something of that caliber. I can get Simple Green here but it's really pricy and takes like 72 hours to get anywhere.
Any help would be much appreciated.

James

I have actually read where some people have used automotive brake fluid. Sounds iffy though. would probably test it on one model first to see if it melts it.

You could have a look around for eco/bio friendly paint stripper. There are lots of brands but they are usually safe to use on plastic and probably very similar to SG.

Break fluid isn't really advisable. It does work and won't melt plastic, but It is slow and stinky and caustic and doesn't even strip as well as SG, so there is really no advantage to it.

Check to see if either of those products are available in NZ.

For metal models, you can use acetone or gasoline if you're in a hurry. It's available anywhere and will remove any paint, clear-coat, and primer quickly. Will melt bases if you don't remove them.

Don't use break fluid. It will melt plastic models if you're not careful and doesn't work worth a crap.

In general, what you want are water-based degreasers (Fairy, Awesome, and Simple Green all fall under this category). Take a stroll around the local market and try out a couple different things.

I use DOT3 break Fluid with great results on plastic models that the paint has not stripped off of them. I am very careful on using Brake Fluid (or any other chemical). Simple Green is a hit or miss depending on what kinds of paint that is on a model. Orange oil type of cleaner works better.

Again regardless of what chemical you use.

ALWAYS uses gloves and be in a WELL ventilated room/area.

What I generally use when I start stripping models is 91% (or better) isopropyl alcohol

It is Cheap. It works on both plastic and metal models, and if you know what you are doing you can recycle it for many uses instead of just one and done process. I place my model in a closed plastic container and let it sit. I've let the model sit for weeks at a time and in my case there was not harm to the models I have stripped.

But it is really up to you to find out what works for you. If you know what kind of paint is on the model, Simple green would probably work.

If not then I recommend the isopropyl alcohol instead.

A bottle of Simple Green is about $7-8 for just under a litre at Bunnings. I just bought a concentrated bottle which makes up about 20 litres for just over $20 which will last a long time.

Supposedly WD40 can be used but it's a spray on product so I'd think it would be annoying to use as soaking the minis has the benefit of going away and doing something else while you wait.

I've actually heard that certain types of nail polish removers work well on plastics, for my metal models i always soak em in mineral spirits (cheap and effective) and tried it on plastics carefully but it eats some of the detail.

For alot of my plastic guys i am repainting i just base over them paying close attention to not glob up in high detail areas and it works out pretty well, even basing white over black, so if you dont have too much paint on the guys right now i would try a light re-base coat and see how it turns out on a couple of em

20 chaos terminator saves vs IG and somehow the commissar's las pistol causes snake eyes...

I just bought some spray and wipe, not sure if it'll work, but was super cheap. Thanks again everyone, lots of things to try. All my orks were just painted using GW paints so should come off pretty well, also bought a really tough bristled toothbrush so that'll also help. I bought my Simple Green from mitre 10, was heaps more expensive, must try Bunnings. Cheers guys, James

Expected something different reading the title

Reminds me when I bought a Borg ship on ebay and the seller wrote "playmate model" on the customs declaration (package was opened of course )
