Somewhere in the dark...

I was watching this batrep from miniwargaming:

http://www.youtube.com/user/miniwargaming?blend=1&ob=5#p/a/u/1/rSIVCEn6Q3w

And right near the start of the video - 50 seconds in (it's the second of two videos), the guy commentating says that he's gonna attack a predator because he can't hurt the front armour of the dreadnought. But, the dread has moved into CC and I thought that hits were always against rear armour in CC? Have a look at 4min 30 approx, there's more of that combat at that point, too.

Also, is being in CC at the end of a turn with a vehicle the same as being in CC with troops - are you locked in combat with vehicles? It might be that he says he can't hit the front armour of the dread, meaning he can't shoot it but I thought he was locked into CC with the pred which is why I ask about that.

Thanks for the help!

Check the BRB, pp73. Walkers can be locked in combat and are hit on front armour unless immobilized. Other vehicles don't get locked, pp63.

The underlined above should not be there.

You ALWAYS use the front armor against a walker in Close Combat.

With that said, Grenades will need a 6 to hit a walker, unless it is immobilized, then you hit based off of weapon skill comparison. (that may have been what you were thinking of) P.73

You always hit vehicles (that are not walkers) on its rear armor, no matter what side your models are physically in B2B with. P.63

Vehicles (that are not walkers) can not be locked in combat.

As said:

Walkers are fought in close combat much like a non-vehicle model. You're locked in, you can or they can Consolidate after destroying or breaking the enemy, etc. You always have to attack their front AV in close combat.

The only other time I can think of when you have to attack a vehicle's front armor is with a Death or Glory attack.

Also remember that in CC it doesn't matter what way a walker is facing. A cheap trick someone asked about recently involved a dreadnought charging a normal vehicle rear first. Immobilize a Land Raider and keep your back to it so no one can shoot you in the rear armor. No one could come up with any rules-based reason why not...

Death or Glory Attacks are also resolved against the front armor when Tank Shocked.
