Subject: Venom's underslung cannon fire arc.

There's been some debate around here about the Venom's fire arc. Initially, I was on the side of 180 degrees for the bottom gun. But, now that I have the model in hand, I see that there's a peg that keeps it from moving. This, to me, indicates that it cannot swivel at all and is stuck in forward arc only. However, I'm about to make minor modifications to the weapons mount so that it can swivel. Bah HA HAAAAAA!
Any how, what's the consensus out there?

If a vehicle's weapons are not given a specified mounting type in the rules (as in the Venom's case) then the fire arc is whatever the weapon actually moves through.
If the weapon doesn't move, then it's a hull-mounted weapon with a 45 degree arc.

Then the fire arc will be dependant on how open-minded your opponents are.

...so wait a minute, someone alters their model to behave in a way it wasn't meant to, and if an opponent should take issue with that then they're not being "open-minded"?
Actually, is there any particular reason why you're doing that? Venoms have the same AV no matter what way they're facing, so you don't really gain any advantage for modelling it that way...that I can think of. Unless there's some way you can hide the vehicle behind a building to claim cover and then still be able to shoot...I dunno, if it were me I'd probably just say "Yeah, whatever" until you started pulling some obvious bs with it.

Here's an example:
You have 4 venoms. You point two at one unit of Long Fangs, and two at another unit. These units are on opposite side of the field. What happens if you eliminate a full unit of Fangs in the first salvo, unlikely yes, but this is an example. Your other venom cant fire at jack. If it could swivel 180 degrees, your shots wouldn't be wasted because you weren't pointing exactly the right direction. This is where it becomes beneficial to have a swiveling cannon.

And if that's how GW intended for venoms to be used then I'd think the gun would have been able to swivel in the first place.

Well if you hold the new venom model the under gun has a full swivel also the top is turret mount. So they technically both have 360.

I'm holding the new Venom and, no, the bottom gun doesn't move at all.

I didn't say that was a bad thing. How open they are to you changing how your models perform in the game will influence how they receive the change.
Whether or not altering your models is something that's worth raising a ruckus over is entirely down to the individual.

As a Dark Eldar player, the bottom gun has a firing arch of 45 degrees due to its fixed hull-mount, while the top one is pintle-mounted and seems to have a 180 degree arch. If you tried to bring an altered model, I wouldn't mind. IF you brought an obviously abusive model and it was a tournament, I'd have you kicked/banned. IF you brought an obviously abusive model and it was a friendly game, I'd call you a beardy and question if you knew what "friendly" really meant.

It gives you more flexibility over target selection in the shooting phase.

Its modelling for advantage.
In a friendly I wouldn't be too bothered
but in a tournament, that don't fly.
