Hello DakkaDakka!
I'am thinking of starting a red Templars army ( Black Templars sucsessers).
Just wondering what you clever and awesome people think I should get to start the army.
You may know that I collect Blood Angels, and I'd be happy to repaint a few.
See you on the other side!

All I found is that they are a codex chapter and have been pictured riding bikes in squads. With all that huge amount of information (yes I know my jokes are bad) I'd say tacticals, bikes and a HQ of your choice for a start (my own personal rule for starting an army is to get an HQ, 2 Troop choices and a heavy support choice though).

As a successor chapter of the Black Templars I would say that the apple wont fall far from the tree. They'd be very Black Templar-esque in their FoC, but being their own entity you can flavor it to taste.
Aside from that the advice above is solid.

I might regret actually saying this soon after saying it... but with what Gaovinni said, have you considered running it as a Ravenwing (DA) counts as army?

There's no reason to regret that. You can field biker Marines anyway just by putting a captain on a bike and taking squads of 6 or more men.
Lexicanum comes up pretty dry and it says they're an Imperial Fist successor, not a Black Templar one, keeping in mind that Templars came from the Fists too.

If they are fist successors than I can more happily apply my suggestion. I was fearful of putting up the option of an army that hates psykers using a psyker filled army as a counts as. Imperial fists on the other hand...
The reason I suggest Ravenwing, would be to make the bikes troops. Plenty of fast options there, and then you have their landspeeders. Sounds like a match to me.

They're not Successors of the Black Templars.
The Black Templars have no 'official' Successors. It's partially why they have so many more Astartes than the Codex Astartes proscribes.
The Red Templars are presumed to be Successors of the Imperial Fists, and are a standard Codex Chapter.

According to the data here they 'are' a successor of the Black Templars founded somewhere before the second war for Armageddon.

Except... the Templar don't really have any successor that we know of, as was already stated. As that is a wiki, my guess is someone just made a typo

Which you can do with Codex: Space Marines, as I also said. That way you also have the options of using Marines and the like with more choices and at better prices.

Ultimately you can do as you like with your project as it were as long as you can field it within a codex.
As to who fluff wise the Red or even White Templars are successors of, both are thought to be from the overly large (5000 ish at last approximation between various crusades), Black Templars. The thought being that it has come to wider attention that Black Templars are not codex compliant in this area and the high lords of terra are siphoning off some of the excess and forming them into separate chapters. But we live in the age of Matthew Ward so who the heck knows for sure about anything anymore.

Oh bullcrap.
It has nothing to do with 'the Age of Matthew Ward'.
The Red Templars have been in existence for a bit, but have always been an unidentified Successor--but with mentions of them using some of the traditions of the Imperial Fists.
Don't ever use warhammer40k.wikia.com as a site for serious canon. It's terribly inaccurate.

Red Templars? Sounds like an army that would like getting up close and murder-y with the enemy, not unlike the Black Templars.
Possibly some assault marine squads?

Considering that they're listed in the vanilla Codex and not in the BT 'dex I'd say it seems unlikely that they're a BT successor.

There is however the case of the Son's of Medusa Chapter being 'recognized officially into being its own chapter after having been a split off group from the Iron Hands that refused to die and instead thrived.

But I think we diverged from the main topic long ago.
