So I'm thinking I want to start an IG army, I have been playing with the AoBR box and really like the game. I started a thread up to get an opinion on what army would fit me, and the IG came out on top, I had already like the IG and thought about them, so that's what I'm going with. I just want some basic opinions on their play style and tactics, also if some one could direct me to some IG battle reports to watch on youtube and what not.

Thank you

Howdy!

I hope i can be of some help to you here. It sounds like your pretty new to the game so Pardon me if i mention some things that you may already know. I just started playing IG a few months ago and i Love the army do death. Now there are many ways to play a Guardsman army. With the amount of varied armor, Large throngs of troops and fun little commissars to play you have a LOT of options. If you stop on down at your FLGS and peruse through an IG Codex, if you have not already. you'll find the possibilities for this army are awesome.

I personally am a fan of a Balanced force. I like running 2 full troop choices, along with a couple basilisks and a handful of varied Leman Russ variants. I am in Love with Commissars so they are always present in quantity in my lists. I also like having 2 or so Valkyries loaded up with storm troopers. Thats the way i play my army.

The Guardsman excel at high model armylists. Honestly my advice on playing IG is run Troops. you cant go wrong with a wall of 100+ footsloggers supported by a few heavy weapons teams laying down fire. just keep the guardsman out of CC as they are Absolutely terrible at it. Just lay down a withering wall of bursts from your flashlights. Once you get into the army more you should look into running chimeras along with the troops. the armor supported by a MultiLaser gives your troops more firepower and a way to keep out of direct contact with advancing enemies. The different versions of the Leman Russ lets you take everything from the standard Battle cannon, to the scary Punisher Gatling Cannon. the high armor value lets you feel safe in moving them up to take out any armor that advances towards your troops.

The ways you can play this army are endless, its all up to how you think tactically and how you think fun. Cause there's nothing worse to me than playing a game with someone who left out the thought of Fun in building his list.

Well, Good Luck My Fellow Imperial, By Throne we can scourge the Enemies of the God-Emperor with the Cold might of the Imperial Guard!

SO we need to get rid of the "You know you should be painting" Headliner... every time i see it i think of the collection of models sitting unpainted

If you search the tactics forum there will be tons and tons of IG threads. There were some really good codex reviews written when the book first came out. Most of that is still applicable. I would suggest reading as many tactics threads as you have time (and can stand) and find some IG battle reports in the bat rep forum.

Not everything on the internet is right, or will work for you. But if it gets your mind working and thinking than it’s worth the time.
You need to start by deciding if you want to run infantry heavy or tank heavy (this is where most of my experience is). The units that you want/need change a lot based on what style of list you want to run. For example, I never, ever field commissars in my guard lists. For guard lists with big infantry blobs they are almost mandatory.
Virtually every unit has a use in some build, which is the great thing IMO about the codex. Generally though I would make the following suggestions:
Units to really consider:
Vendettas
Manticores
Hydras
Company Command Squads (with 4 plasmaguns or 4 melta guns)

Units to stay away from:
Penal Legion
Conscripts
Ratlings
Ogryn
Leman Russes that aren’t the standard or demolisher versions

I hope that helps. Happy reading!

Actually penal legion and most of the non-punisher Leman Russ tanks aren't all that bad.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I see a lot of newer guard players trick out their russes and they wind up with a 250+ pt shooty tank that is never going to actually shoot. Cheap cheap cheap is the name of the game, and the plain and demolisher russes do that best IMO. The others get very situational, expensive, and are just as easy to supress. But I'm not the end all be all of 40k, try it out and do what works for you.

Thank you very much much for your opinion, and now I am very excited to play them. I will probably go for an infantry heavy with heavy weapons and some amour support kind of army!!
