As a Father's Day gift, we (my brother and I, his girlfriend and a mutual friend of ours) decided to set up a simple Dungeon Crawl in WHRP, since every time my dad has tried to make us play a campaign, life gets in the way. I volunteered to be GM, because I figured I would get lots of good help from this site, if nothing else.
What do you guys think of this story: The group of adventurers all meet at a Monestary in the middle of nowhere, all passing by, none with prior history. The monks tell them of a Cursed Sword in a cave nearby with plenty of traps in it; the sword MUST be destroyed, and the Monks are capable of doing it, but are incapable of actually getting to it. They want the adventurers to go there, survive the traps, and bring the sword out for them to destroy it.
The sword, when first found, appears to be nothing out of the ordinary. When a model picks it up, they must take a Will Test. Every so often (Two Minutes?) I will take a Secret Will test for the player at -5% WP per time ticked (so eventually they would get down to 0% WP). When they fail their test, they become very drowsy and suffer -50% Main Profile Stats until the party rests. When they do finaly rest, I will take the player who was cursed into a different room, describe a dream in which he wakes, finds himself surrounded by Bloodletters, and a Sword materializes in his hand, and then ask him what he does; if he initiates combat with the Bloodletters, I then tell him to stay in the room. I then go to the rest of the party and tell them that Chaos Lord Dragoreth, the Owner of the Cursed Sword, charges at them sword drawn, initiating a combat. "Lord Dragoreth" would be the party member carrying the Sword when he succombed, using his stats and equipment, except for the Cursed Sword.
It is all an illusion, however, and IF there is a Mage in the party I will take a Secret Int test to see if he realizes it's his party member, if it is a Near Miss (1-5%) they see that they chopped through the illusion but the enemy isn't affected, or something similar. Or, if the party is careless enough, they will merely just chop down whoever got possessed.
You guys think this sort of thing would be fun for a first time Dungeon Crawl? Automatically Appended Next Post: Test Chamber 1: The Test of Slaanesh.
In the first Chamber, They will come across a Ravine in the middle of the room, with two Bridges; one is a resplendant bridge of Gold and Daimonds, another is a rickety old wooden bridge. If players cross the Golden Bridge, they must take a Strength test or be flat out killed; devoured by the Mimic possing as a Bridge. If they cross the Rickety Old Wooden Bridge, they must take an Ag test or suffer 8 Wounds, from falling into the pit below the Bridge. If they take the Humble route, and try to jump over the chasm, the illusion will disappear, and they will see the floor is all around them, except for the hole under the Wooden Bridge and the Mimic will be made clear to them, and they can just bypass it.
Test Chamber 2: The Test of Tzeentch.
Not sure, going to have to think on this for a while. Idea's welcome.
Test Chamber 3: The Test of Nurgle.
The Test of Nurgle is a two part room; one is a main room with two doors and an Alter, and then the upper floor is filled with poisonous gasses. Stealing an idea from the "Challengeing Players" thread, upon the Alter is a Chalice filled with Putrid Slime. When the players first enter the room, the door closes shut, and Rot Zombies start attacking the party in an unnumerable horde. Two players must boost one up into the upper floor, who must cross as fast as he can, drop down, and empty the Chalice. While up on the top, he suffers -5% Toughness every turn. In order to empty the Chalice, he must drink it, take a Toughness Test, and either burp disgustingly or die even more disgustingly. Upon drinking it, the Zombies crumble and they can move on.
Test Chamber 4: The Test of Khorne.
Single Combat with a Herald of Khorne, should be fun. They walk into a giant room with a big red Line in it, turns out to be a Big Red Circle, flames leap up blocking the first person who crosses it from the rest of the party, and a Herald jumps out and starts a combat.
Lots of ways to die, does this make me a Killer Game Master? I do plan on supplying the Ressurections Scrolls right off the bat, about 2 to each Warrior Priest/equivalents. Just so that it's not totally unfair.
