The Search feature seems broken... otherwise I would've searched for this topic as I'm sure it's been discussed before...
However...
How does it work when your unit is in same area of terrain as your opponent?
If both squads are more than 2" apart, does both squad get cover saves? (visions of space marines and orks firing at each other behind overturned tables and chairs... like the old western shootouts )
When assaulting, are they moving thru cover and thus their Initiative is reduced to 1?
I don't have the brb handy, but a page reference would be great.
Thanks.

If firing models are less than 2" away from their target (assuming they are in one giant piece of area terrain) then no cover save is concerned.
If firing models are 2" or more away from their target, a cover save is conferred.
These are covered in the section under area terrain. There is no exception for any of the terrain rules just for being in the same piece of terrain.
Regarding the assault question, are they assaulting through terrain? If the answer is yes, then yes, they are moving through cover. Seems pretty simple to me.

Dark is thinking about firing out of terrain.
If you and your opponent are both in area terrain, you will both get cover saves from firing. (BRB page 22 2nd bullet point, models whose bases are at least partially in the area terrain get cover saves regardless of where the shot is coming from.)
If you assault a unit in area terrain, it doesn't matter if you are in the same terrrain with them, you assault at initiative 1 unless you have assault grenades. (BRB page 34, if any model in a unit that is assaulting has to go through difficult or dangerous terrain the unit must take the relevant test, and further down the page under assault grenades, last sentence.)

I have found again and again that in encounter actions, the day goes to the side that is the first to plaster its opponent with fire. The man who lies low and awaits developments usually comes off second best. - Erwin Rommel

wizard is correct. If 50% of your models are in area terrain you get a cover save no matter were the shots are coming from (unless of coarse the shots deny cover saves)

Not true. That entire paragraph is labelled "firing out of terrain" - if you are NOT firing out of terrain, the 2" rule does NOT apply.
