So, I finally had a chance yesterday to sit down and watch last thursday's 'Turn 8'. Whilst I fully understand the hype generated by Mantic's announcement of their 'Warpath' sci-fi system I found the KoW section to be the most fascinating bit.

To summarise for those who have not yet watched:

This summer will see the release of an updated ruleset - this will be the last of the 'test' rules before publication of the official rulebook next year.
Also, all army lists are being updated with three new lists being added (Goblins, Twilight Kin and Men) to bring the total to 8.
Two new armies are in development which will feature original concepts rather than the generic fantasy stuff they've done up to now.

How does this relate to tournaments? Well, late this year when they have the new rules and 8 armies to work with they are holding a 'Masters Invitational' tournament at Maelstrom consisting of Game designers and top Warhammer players. The whole tournament will be played out using chess clocks as a giant experiment to see if tourney players enjoy the experience - if so this will become the norm for all future KoW events.

What do people think of forcing time constraints - will it be exciting or just frustrating? Will it encourage people to solely play small elite armies over hordes to reduce the risk of forfeiting (which at present is what will happen if you don't complete 6 turns in 'your' hour of play from a 2-hour game)?

And what's with the 'invitational' thing? I'd have happily entered that event even knowing its a testbed - its nice to have a company that gives enough of a crap about your experience to want to test things out before they sell them...

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

I haven't made the plunge into KoW yet, but I really like what Mantic is doing with their line of figures and their ruleset. I also really dig the Chaos Dwarves they produce. I haven't played WHFB in a couple years and don't really feel like getting back in, so maybe KoW can help me itch that fantasy wargame scratch.

Looking forward to seeing how this all develops.

KoW is a good game, but I also list it amongst the games that don't adapt well to tournement play.

Could you explain your reasoning Catyrpelius? I think it does adapt reasonably well.

I collect:

Grand alliance death (whole alliance)

Stormcast eternals

Slaves to Darkness - currently Nurgle but may expand to undivided.

The simplicity of the rules works against it in tournement play, I tend to find more rules arguments in KoW then I do Warhammer. I feal this would slow down the game.

Don't get me wrong, I like this game alot but I think it would be a pain in a tournement setting.

MORE Rules arguments? I've found the simplicity to limit them, while simultaneously allowing it to flow smoothly, both factors that would contribute to a good tournament.

Could you repeat a few rules arguments you've heard? I can't see much, if any ambiguity with the ruleset and the current armies. To me, they're simple and clear; the only arguments I can see happening are LoS ones, which occur in just about any and every tabletop game.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I can't image what rule disagreements you could have. I think KoW is the perfect game for tournament play because of its simplicity. There should be very few rules problems and games are quick so should be completed.

I have not encountered any rules arguments or dissagreements playing KOW over the last 6-7 months. It does flow well as a game and enphasises tacitical decisions as opposed to big scary beasty's.......the added preassure of the chess clock would work well, as it keeps the game moving and as Ronnie said even the best general can make mistakes under preassure. I am probably a bit biased as I have always been a chess player (competitive and social) and I am used to chess clocks. I think it will also be a great differential and cut out time wasting tournament players who stretch things out a little far. I know this sounds harsh but we all know unfortunately they are out there.

Ok i dont have a rules argument but i do have a rules question.
I know this is off topic but it will save time and a whole new link.

If you are charged by 2 different units. On your attacks back, how many attacks do you get?

Is it your set amount devided between the 2 units as you see fit

Or is it double as your facing 2 units?

Cheers.

@ttaylor048 - you dont get attacks back!

After the charge is finished and attacks against you have been resolved, you take your nerve test and if you are steady or wavering you back off 1"

On your go you may choose to charge one of the two units that attacked you previously, or something else entirely if you can!
