A bad paint job will ruin a brilliant model, but an excellent paintjob can make a lack-lustre model beautiful...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Probably work

Why do they have to be mutually exclusive?

This... A simple stock model with a good paintjob is good.

A awesome greenstuff sculpt or kitbash with a pile of paint caked on horribly is bad and makes it a bad conversion and actually ruins the model.

The poll really doesn't make a lot of sense, because while a brilliant paint job can liven up even the bog standardest tac marine, take a model as brlliant as Studio McVey's Ruby, and give it a flat, no shading, no tone paintjob, and it's going to look terrible.

I love converted models but if you can't paint them well enough to let the details shine, then just hit them with some gray primer and be done until you have practiced and honed your skills.
Gray probably the color that leaves the details most visible and I prefer seeing a solid color than gray, green, metal, and whatever other colors of material go into a model's construction.

For me, its a little bit different.

A perfectly painted nice looking army without conversions looks to me just like the rest of the heavy metal paint job samples in an army book.
( while beautiful, it becomes boring and repetitive like other beautiful armies :'P)

But with some nice conversion , its like "wow thats new!"

But i also agree, conversion without a good paint job is very easily ruined.

Conversions are cool and all that, but a good paintjob can make any mini look good, while a bad paintjob or no paintjob can make any mini look bad.

I agree. I'd rather see well painted but boring than a good conversion painted badly.

I voted for a converted army because my painting is decent, but my conversions are tons better. I usually have more fun sculpting.

Wow, stacked poll much?

Unconverted does not equal boring, dull, or anything of the sort. I'd much prefer my models to be at a high quality of painting standard before I'd ever complain about their conversions. Plus, conversions equal having to pay more. You're going to tell a golden demon quality painted army that he's fielding a dull force because he didn't shell out any extra cash for different bits that didn't come with the kit? A little harsh, don't you think?

I would rather have an awesome fig painted average than an average fig painted awesome.

I've seen poorly painted yet awesome conversions, but generally poor paint jobs ruin conversions.

Id say an amazingly converted model. Only because I assume the poor paint jobs are subject to being stripped and repainted.
You can't go back and reconvert the good paintjobs and expect to get the same thing in the end.

A well converted model can be ruined by a bad paint job. A standard model can look great with a good paint job.

A beautiful paintjob can bring out the best in an average sculpt... but a beautioful base can turn an average result into a Slayer Sword winner.

...Its happened before...

I'm going to go with what everyone else here has said and say that painting > converting.

If only because I can't convert worth a damn.

Or paint, for that matter.

Because a great paintjob and a crappy paintjob cannot exist at the very same time on a single mini...

The options are to consider preferences on which result would satisfy the sample audience.

I highly doubt that a poll would be started with options such as:

-Crappy paintjob on standard minis

-Awesome paintjob on highly converted/scratchbuild/sculpt

and would stand up to a stiff breeze.
