In competetive games, what is the hardest army to play with and why? I was wondering because my friend asked me the same question, and myself still wondering which army to follow through with. I was thinking it would be between the Brets, Beastmen, and Wood elves.

Definitely Wood Elves. The army was really subpar in 7th, and with the complete banhammer-nerfing of skirmishers and that being their main strength makes them definitely difficult. Treeman spam works, but it's just as good as any other army of monsters, really.

Wood elves have no real infantry blocks worth fielding, atleast beastmen can throw out a few blocks of dudes.

There is one way to make wood elves slightly more competitive but never in tournaments, that's using lots of wood terrain this gives a huge advantage to Welves with all that wood focused special powers.
out of friendly games where you can use terrain (as me and a few friends have been doing, works great and fits with the whole wood elves don't leave the forest theme, technically wood elves should always fight inside a forest but that will never happen in tournaments its unfair on the other players
but yes go wood elves, beast men are still slightly competitive they just aren't very popular (They still have a sort of cheap horde unit plus the whole ambush rule could really be spammed so annoyingly)
Brets are still strong (still the best mounted army) plus you got bowmen that are just perfect for taking charges (or making a speed bump)
I would say though if you go wood elves be willing to loose a LOT

And can't those Bretonian archers get access to fire arrows for like 1pt/model? With so many regenerating horrors out there (hellpit, hydra, trolls) they're a lot better now. Always take fire on them. Plus knights with a flaming banner...the only thing they don't work against would be the now-very-rare dragon princes. Hmmm...Bretonian archers? Yes please. I don't know too many other troop choices that can scare away a hellpit or hydra.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Cool, im still deciding what to roll for my WHFB army, so if i didn't go Dwarfs, i wanted either Brets or Beastmen. Only thing is, i dislike the French theme on the Brets....
Also, Wood Elves all seem so irrelevant, i mean, they aren't really doing anything besides hugging trees and hanging out in Athel Loren?

the bret problem is easily fixed, by using other models instead, use chaos knights and call them brets, just give them a nice shiny (heroic) paintjob and convert using green stuff. OR just buy alternative models
I got a mate who made a whole bret army using tomb king models (skeletons) so the whole army is basically a bunch of bret skeletons (knights and all)
also the wood elves are more powerful then you can imagine
the only problem is wood elves are stuck inside the forest.
