If i use a drop pod, can i combatsquad my unit and only have half of the unit take the drop pod or do they all have to be in the drop pod?

They must all ride in the pod or none of them. You may CS upon arrival with the drop pod as they are an exception to this rule.

Personally, I always let my opponents do it since it means one more KP for me and a weaker unit to kill

THey can still combat squad out of the drop pod, as CS has a specific rule allowing this.
