Are SM scouts a good unit? if they are how should you use them?.

5x Scouts with BP and CCW. Sarge with PF and Combi weapon

Mounted in a Land Speeder Storm with Multimelta

If you go first, you can scout move 24" and then on your turn move 12" the scouts can get out an assault stuff (maybe immobile tanks) and the LSS can try to melta another tank.

If you go second, you have a Fast Scoring Skimmer that can either outflank or Deep Strike. It can also outflank and hunt tanks as well.

The other option I like is

Telion with Sniper Scouts and a ML

Telion gives the whole squad stealth so they save points on camo cloaks.
You get a BS5 Missile laucher.
You get a cheap scoring unit with infiltrate and steath. It can sit on most objectives for a while.

Scout bikers are good too!. give them 3 grenade launchers, have them outflank, and rapid fire into some rear armor! Cluster mines are good also.

Scouts bikers are an awsome unit. Not sure about normal scouts though.

Are camo cloaks wasted on Scouts that don't have Sniper Rifles, or does it help a Scout unit that is there to camp an objective?

I use 2 scout units to camp on objectives in my BA list , snipers, a missle launcher and camo cloaks they usually earn their points back and are a great low priority harrasment unit. Their best preformance thus far was last turn of a game killing Vect of the dark eldar. He had already lost his shadow field.

In Codex Marines I run scouts all the time. Telion, Snipers, ML/HB. With Telion I don't require Camo Cloaks because he confers stealth to the squad. The other squad type I run is an outflanking CCW/BP squad. They do well enough especially for last minute objective grabbing in Roll and Tie I mean.. Capture and Control.

To my understanding, Using the Land Speeder as a transport for first turn assaults and a MM in the enemy deployment zone first turn is lots of fun.

Wolf Scouts are good, I don't like Scouts in DA. BA they're alright but honestly I'd prefer Assault Squads for the Assaults... so they're only good for Snipers and ML/H.Bolter (this is my opinion). I suppose being a cheaper Assault unit is worth something though...and it still follows the same cheese the Codex Marines do...except you lose Combat Tactics and gain Red thirst...

I love scouts. They are in every list i build. Without a doubt the Scout speeder storm with 5 scouts, power fist kicks butt in every game. I cant tell you how many landraiders i have destroyed first turn. This coupled with either a dreadnaught multimelta/heavyflamer, or a scout bike unit with combimelta, Gl, meltabombs will make your opponent think first about letting you go first. In objective based games this is a great thing. In any game it means that your foe is playing by your rules from the moment that the game begins. Sniper scouts never seem to cut it for me unless they have telion in the unit. With telion they all benefit from the camo cloaks that he has which helps offset his cost. the ablity to allocat telions wounds can be devestating.

Overall, I love scouts. take em.

Cluster mines and locator beacon are great upgrades. Shame there's no way to make them troops unlike tac bikes ....

Scouts can also be useful in BA army, because they carry a locator beacon. So if you need to deep strike anything without DoA such as a Land Speeder of a Storm Raven, Sternguard (or even a Land Raider) you can use scouts to bring it in on target.

It is probably better to have scouts start the game on their own while everyone else deep strikes, than to have a Storm Raven sitting on its own at the start of a game or risk a land raider turning a mishap.

Also, going to ground with cloaks give you a 2+ cover save. I've had my scouts survive massive amounts of heavy artillery and weapons fire while holding an objective. By the end of the game I may have lost 3 or 4 scouts and soaked up enough shots to kill my entire army several times over. Going to ground is not that bad with scouts, since they don't actually kill much on their own.

Though with Telion and snipers you can drop MC's pretty easy. I stick with the ML for this unit, usually letting Teliion use his BS for it. Since you get to allocate wounds he is a Warrior/Nob killing machine.

Speed freaks 4000 points
Drop Marines 5000+ points Black Templars 1500+ (+1000 WIP)
Word Bearers 1000 points Fleshtearers 3000+ points
Catachan 2000 +(+500 WIP)
Dark Eldar 1500+(+1000 WIP)
High Elves 3000 points Vampire Counts 2000 points

Sm scouts can be used with shrike for an alfa strike list. Also, I think scouts are very decent, not good, but decent. Worth taking if you think they are cool or they fitt your playing style.

They are better in an ravenguard army or the sucessor chapter from the badab war with the stealth army tactics. (The man with the big gun.)
