So, I'm thinking of starting some kind of fantasy army. I've never played fantasy before, but it seems intresting and I have a feeling I may like it, but there's a slight problem with the army I want to play.
I wanna play empire, but another guy at the club is building an empire gunline (With a steamtank thrown in for flavor) so I'm wondering what kind of punchy stuff can I run to have an army that plays DIFFERENTLY than your average pistol-spam list. Now, I don't want to neglect firepower, I think at some level I'm going to need some cannons/mortars, but I don't want any shooty core, I want my core to be punching the other army in the face.
Whats the best way to do this?

Blocks of Halbred State Troopers and Great Swordsman, wizards with magic to buff them up is a good start.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Could you build an interesting theme around war priests and flagellants? Some kind of people's crusade?
Still need to fill up core with state troops, and that'd screw up the theme, though.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something. |

Fill core with free company. Nothing says crusade like angry peasants, knights, and religious nutjobs.

As long as you have a Warrior Priest or Arch Lector in the list you can count one unit of Flagellants as Core.

And a WArrior priest in a unit of state troops giving them hatred, helps them break face.

I donno about flagellants, they seem to glass-hammer, though a priest to buff some monster character, or give a big brick of infantry hate, is a cool idea.
What do you guys think of the knightly orders btw? Are they worth their points cost?

Knights are decent I suppose for support roles to the infantry blocks, but dont rely on a majority of them imo with steadfast and fighting at initiative making cavalry a bit of a liability depending what they face and how the dice react

As with all Empire troops a wizard with good augment spells is helpful (necessary?). Things like the Life Lore +Toughness spell with ToV up can be fun (20 T7 Flaggies )
