People do stupid things in their youth, some more stupid than others. I, obviously, am living proof of that.

It's been a long, long time since I've logged onto DakkaDakka, and I only decided to come back after I had something of an epiphany. Whilst doing what socially uncertain teenagers do, I did a lot of things that offended people here and generally made myself look like a colossal douche. Rather than take the easy way out and run my head over with a truck, I decided to grow a pair, take a step back and work on improving myself one step at a time.

I'm coping with my clinical depression now, and life in general is looking up for me. I'm in my last year of school and studying with my nose to the grindstone, and I have ambitions of becoming an ESL teacher in Japan. The turbulent past few years are water under the bridge, and there's no time to feth around. I have excellent grades, a high IQ and an active imagination, and I'm not letting anything go to waste.

So tell me, Dakkaites: Have you ever been in a similar situation? Was there a point in your life where you flipped things upside-down and became a totally different person?

Addendum: It's good to be back.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.   |

It's happened to me before. When it comes to depression and the like I've burned a couple bridges before and you can only take your past transgressions, be realistic about where you are now and do what's practically best while learning from your mistakes moving forward. Also, I have no recollection of you being a colossal douche fwiw

Sure have, who hasnt? Mine was when I was a young teen. I just hated people and really hated myself. But for some weird reason, I woke up one morning, went out and got a job and completely changed who I was. Must of just got sick of it all. Glad you decided to take control of your life

I think at some point people realize that the world is not going to change to accommodate them and they have to make those changes themselves. Even folks who seemingly had their life together when they were young do this to some extent. Part of growing up I guess, welcome to adulthood. Every 5 years or so I look back and see how much I have grown and how much of me has stayed the same. If you can look back and see improvements that is great as long as you don't lose your core self.

I can't wait until my midlife crisis now...those changes look awesome. Fast cars, young women, toupee's, extensive collections of luxury items from my youth taking hold in my later years..... aww crap is it starting?

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Shame to hear about that CE, I know exactly what it feels like, believe me. I went through a serious depression phase about two years ago, and the main factor from that was extreme shyness, and I really mean extreme, and I did go a bit off the rails pretty badly for a while. Two years on, I'm still feeling it sometimes but I was able to turn it around, I went out more, was able to make some friends at college, and started new activities such as fencing and even simply going to the FLGS for games every now and again, and it's really helped me, so you aren't alone in situations like this, there are many people in this situation and we do get through this.

Welcome back CE, glad to see you decided to return.

As to the question, not really, I got sucked into the wargamming and Roleplaying stuff pretty early, so most of any anger I may have felt was channelled out that way.

I do remember getting annoyed at the odd console game mind, my fist through a wall incident after loosing to Bison twenty bouts in a row was embarresingly brought up by my brother at his recent wedding, the git.

You'll find many many teenagers in the same road as you. Its ok. As you start to come out of the hormone haze and the brain matures, a lot of this stuff evens out, especially as life kicks you in the ass a few times. Good to see this is occurring here.

Welcome back mate! You never struck me as a douche by the way..

Regards the rest, Nope, im full of the joys of spring despite the whole world being fethed up and full of death and hate.

I recommend four or five tours of duty in all of the biggest gak holes in the world. Following that, merely being able to get a hot shower everyday feels like a luxury!

And when your lifes going well (got a decent job, got a nice bird, got money for minis and video games and cans) life is just sweeeet.

All I can say on a serious note is.. well.. really, really try and remember this one line. I found it to be true no matter where I went.. in the billions.
