basicly i have been looking over the possessd page in the chaos codex, im wondering why people hate them so much, theres probably only one poor rule mabey, but well it seems like a good CC unit i probably could use them, and if they get a 6, a 4, or a 2 they can be wicked in CC, why all the hate?

They are unreliable...
People make lists with a tactic in mind and with possessed you can't really rely on what their capabilities will be.

Well yeah.
Casual lists are fine with them but for a competetive list they aren't great...

its the unreliability.

you have no clue what special ability they will have and so really can't plan to use them for anything.

if they could purchase their special ability they would be alot better.

If the rest of the codex wasn't so bad they'd probably get more play.

But the Chaos Codex has a really great HQ, but 2 really bad ones to choose from so everyone goes with the undercosted demon prince.

They have only 1 truly viable troop choice, one that's good enough, a couple that are mediocre, and several that just plain suck.

They have 1 truly viable heavy. Another that isn't all bad, but not nearly as good as the first choice. And a bunch of terrible choices.

When you have to build an army list with the above at its core, you can't go wasting points on things that may or may not fill the role you had in mind for them based off chance. Most just go with termicide and call it a day. Cheaper, more effective, and can be counted on to get the job you want out of them done.

EDIT: Redacted. Guess they can't have wings. Still 450 points for a unit that does what Khorne Berserkers do for better and cheaper.

As I just posted in a thread over in Tactics about Terminators, advising people to keep them cheap...

You need Troops to score and win the game, HS to give you some long-range antitank to open enemy transports and reduce/eliminate your opponent's mobility, and HQs to Lash or just kill stuff. This doesn't tend to leave a lot of points for Elites.

Possessed are expensive and one-dimensional. They kill stuff in assault. They can't take special weapons, and also can't take a power fist, so they can totally boned by Dreadnoughts. Their big failing is not being significantly better than Berserkers, despite being significantly more expensive and NOT SCORING. Honestly, to make them worthwhile with their present stats and as an Elite choice they'd have to be cheaper than cult marines.

My bad, they can't have wings. Still 450 points for the unit you propose, which isn't competitive in the slightest.

In the previous dex you could buy them wings. Along with several other options. They got pricy if you loaded them up, but at least you knew what you were getting and could plan for their usage. They also got an Aspiring Champ who could take a fist. And were just as scoring as every other infantry unit. I regularly used a unit in my old 3rd ed Emperor's Children army.

Most don't take them due to their points cost and randomness.

I run 10 possesed in a rhino with MOT. Str 5 meq with a 4+ invun serves me well, the randomness is something I enjoy.

The way I run them i think it's 310 points, not bad really for a unit that can deal with next to anything on the field. They are not TH/SS termies, but they are fun. Isn't that what the games about?

The game is about fun, but folks enjoy multiple different kinds of fun, and prioritize them differently at different times.

The OP asked why people don't like Possessed, and the answer is that because, in a competitive context, they are disappointing.
