in a little hole in the ground...crying myself to sleep


so i finnaly started playing sm.
here is what i have so far. This is supposed to be 'in-character' for my chapter, not really supposed to win much, just for fun

HQ
captain with thunder hammer, combi-flamer-140
troops
sarge and 7 tac marines, a flamer, a missile launcher, and rhino-205pts
X2

sarge and 7 tac marines, flamer, heavy bolter, and rhino-205pts
x2

4 scouts with snipers and a missile launcher, sarge with combi-flamer-85pts

fast attack
land speeder with tornado assault cannon-90pts
x2

heavy support
predator with twin-linked lascannon and bolter sponsoons-130
x2


it is kind of a mechanised list,and it stresses my chapter's style - tanks, fire, and thunder hammers
i still kinda want this to win a few things, so please give me your thoughts

Conduct While Gaming
While rolling a die, do not say, “Anything but a 1!” unless you wish the die to come up as 1. Any other such attempts to anger the “Dice Gods” will result in the existential equivalent of continuously flipping a coin and having it come up heads every time (for reference, see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead). Your dice will be cursed to roll ones for everything other than morale checks, which will come up sixes.

ORK PLAYERS HAVE A LIMIT OF 1 SCREAMS OF WAAAAAAGH PER HOUR. violators will be forced to play tau.

Players with chimeras and las weapons shall pronounce chimera ki-mere-uh, not chim-ere-uh. Violators will be forced to play nothing but world eaters. Non-40k personnel must purchase and build a chimera.

I don't think Tac Marines get a Heavy Weapon unless you fill em up to 10 (which I would do anyhow, since you then have the option to combat squad). The Tac Marines also benefit immensly from Power Firsts. Your Landspeeders have alot of pricy weapons on them for a frail vehicle. I would shave a bit here to get points for more Marines + Fists.

Well your right about it not winning much.

Where's the Captain go? Walking by himself?

If your Chapters all about tanks, fire, and thunder hammers, which sounds like Salamanders FYI, might's well use Vulcan (counts-as Vulcan would work too)

I would suggest getting some Assault Terminators with a Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield

and if you insist on using a Captain which is sub-par choice, especially with a thunder hammer, he should have a Storm Shield also. I would recommend a Relic Blade tho since he can keep his high initiative

yeah, it is like salamanders, it is a sucsessor chapter. i just don't like taking special characters when i don't play the army they are from

DAMN! someone else has my idea... My Astral Falcons are a Salmanders successor... but do use vulcan in my view best character in the SM codex

I'd +1 on assault termies with either vulcan or a terminator armoured captain with thunder hammer and combi...

I think you should reconsider those predators. If you want lascannons on them then sponsons are the way to go, don't throw away a perfectly good autocannon. I believe your points are slightly off too.

I've never tried assault cannon speeders because I always imagine their range will make them vulnerable to a whole slew of things. They're priced the same as typhoons too, which is bad news for any FA unit. They can probably work fine if you know what you're doing but if you don't, maybe check out typhoons.

Captain setup is a mixed bag... all he's really doing for you here is bringing some s8 attacks, for 140pts. If you really want that, you can get it for a fraction of the cost on sergeants who can't be singled out in assault. And as was earlier implied, your captain has no ride unless you combatsquad, since rhinos carry max 10 guys. I'll disagree with captains being a subpar choice, they have strengths (scoring bikes, command squad, bike command squad) that make them worth taking, you're just not playing to any of them.
I have a suggestion here though. Since you clearly want a TH-wielding leader, count him as a master of the forge. A naked MotF has two s8 attacks from his servo arms, a better flamer than your captain, a twinlinked plasma pistol that he can fire simultaneously and he costs a lot less. He loses the iron halo so will die pretty hard against fists and such, but he gains artificer armour and bolster defenses.

Go all the way if you're going to take a TH on the captain. Take TWO Thunder hammers for MORE KRUMPIN'!
