Howdy,
So this is my first army list, and I was hoping y’all could give me some tips. I’m working with 500pts just as a general setup.
My thought is I should drop the CC weapon from my CCS officer, and frags from my platoon officer, to give the PCS or CCS
2 GLs and a flamer or something like that. But this is what I have written down for now. Most of my army is unassembled
at the moment.
Company CS, 65pts
Power weapon, Vox-caster
Platoon CS 40pts
Vox-caster, Grenades
Infantry Squad x3, 210pts (70 each)
Vox-caster, Grenade Launcher, HWT Auto-cannon
Leman Russ Battle Cannon, 185pts
HB Sponson, Hull Lascannon
Thoughts and comments are appreciated, thanks
Deadman
Oh, I alos have a hellhound and a sentinel to swap out stuff with.

Drop the HB sponsons, the power weapons, the vox system and the auto cannon. Fill your CCS with 4 special weapons to make use of their BS4. Melta or plasma. Kit your PCS in the same way. I hope you're combining those Infantry Squads. They need at least one Commissar. You might want to give them a better special weapon too.

OK so short of droping another $30+ for the plasma and melta gunners required for that, I would be looking at using either GLs or flamers for the moment. A commissar I can do however.
May I ask what the advantage to having a 30 man squad is? Absolute noob here, but I did find out that most of the local guys play space marines or chaos, so I don't know if that changes anything.

The advantage is that every las gun trooper is a wound you can take that doesn't go to a weapon you paid points for.
And the real advantage to Guard is that they have /alot/ of special weapons and heavy weapons for low cost. You want to fill every special weapon slot you can. You also want to pick the best weapons for the BS of the trooper and their role.
Flamers don't care what the BS is so are best used for BS 3. But they are super short ranged and best used to dislodge enemy infantry from cover.
Sniper rifles wound on a 4 no matter what and rend on a 6, but they otherwise allow armor saves. Wounds force a pinning test, but if the unit is fearless or good moral (like marines), they will probably pass the test or just ignore it. Sniper Rifles are good against high toughness monsterous creatures though, as they normally have bad armor and depend on their high toughness to ignore damage.
Grenade Launchers... Str 3 AP 6 Frag grenades means if you don't scatter, your probably not going to wound anything. If you do wound, most will get their armor save. Krak Grenades are Str 6 AP 4. They will wound most infantry, but will have a hard time against vehicles except the weakest AV values. Only real good thing about the GL is it's 36" range.
Melta guns are short range, but will destroy most infantry and ignore their armor. at 6" or less, you get an extra d6 to it's armor penetration so vehicles, even AV 14, fear it. If you have BS 3 troops, it is definatily needed en-mass.
Plasma guns have a touch less strength than melta (str 7), but excellent AP and range. You can even use it against all but the heaviest armor with a chance of success. And for targets within 12" you can rapid fire if you don't move. Just note you also can't charge. Plasma is expensive and has 'Get's Hot!' where the user takes a single wound. You can take a armor, invulnerable, or cover save, best on avaible.
Sorry, but the best weapons are the plasma and melta guns, probably why they are so expensive.
Leave a vox in your PCS and CCS and for at least one platoon if you blob them and you want to do Orders. Blobs really need a Commissar to keep it in the fight. Power weapons in a blob make it capable of surviving an assault and even winning. Meltabombs are the only chance you have if you get in CC with a walker... the only real defence is to shoot it before it can get into close combat.
For Heavy weapons, you have a good start. The best two for Guard are Auto-Cannons and Lascannons. Lascannons are best used against AV 12+ and ACs for everything 12 or less, plus the ACs get 2 shots. Orders, like 'Bring it Down!' (issued by your CCS) make the squad's weapons twin linked against MCs and Vehicles, if the orders ae passed using the target's leadership. Read the rules concerning Orders carefully, it is a aspect of Guard that shouldn't be ignored.
You also need a second troop choice as one PCS and the PISs are a single one. You would need to get a seond PCS and at least two PISs for it to count as a second troop choice. You could also get a Vet squad or a Penal squad.
Good luck and I hope this helps some!

Unfortunately, there are (to my knowledge) no documented cases of people using IG platoons that aren't combined with power weapons or mounted in chimeras just for backup scoring. This is why you're being told to "blob up" and get a commissar.

Ok good to know, thanks for the help everyone I will give this a revise and then stick it back up for inspection.
One last question, would I be better off going with chimeras or stick to more troop blobs in the future?
Would dropping the tank and making all three squads Vet's be a good idea? Throwing in either the Hellhound or sentinel in place of it.
