Apart from me, there is only one person I have ever seen down at my local Games Workshop who uses Legion of the Damned. And I only saw that guy once. Ever.

I am an avid user of them, and usually play them along with their whole idea of striking when help is most needed-which they usually do pretty well.

True, they are nearly as costly as Terminators. But they have a wide array of weaponry to choose from (From what I can tell they are the only non-Termie model capable of wielding a Heavy Flamer) and they are walking storm shields (3++)

They can dominate in Close Combat and have excellent firepower, have the same Invun. as a Storm Shield, have a good amount of attacks and have fantastic Deep Strike capabilities, and personally, for 10 points less than a hulking Terminator, I think they are extremely underestimated/underused.

Was wondering what others thought-I have attached a poll to sum up but would like to hear what people thought, how they use them or how you've seen them played.

They are expensive and die to the same thing as most marines... mass fire. The invulnerable save is useful against anti-tank weapons but if your opponent is using anti-tank on your infantry you have much bigger problems.
That said they are nice and the models are smexy so i would consider it...

Good for you but their survivability is the same as regular marines when facing small arms and for their price it isn't worth it.

They're pretty sweet IME.

They can reroll scatter so arrive pretty accurately - in the spatial sense at least, and they all have two attacks and can rapidfire bolters before assaulting so they've no problem with light infantry. Also slow/purposeful so they can make really good use of a multimelta (and moving through terrain doesn't slow them down... : P).

I've run them with PG/MM to pretty good effect. You've got to place them right because they are slow, no doubt about that, but they can DS into terrain pretty safely with their 3++. Their invulnerable save is great really, it lets them reliably counter a lot of things that destroy normal marines. Things like plasma vets, battle/demolisher cannons, LRXCs, incubi/banshees/monsters, any assault unit that relies on power weapons... what else... ML longfangs? Well, the list goes on.

Of course, LotD die like other space marines to massed small arms fire, but you might find that not a lot of players pack enough of that to take out a squad of marines the old fashioned way, preferring shortcuts involving things like ap2. And that's pretty much what they're for as far as I can tell.

They're great if your opponent forgets about them-He is completely unprepared and they mow 'em down.

I use them quite a bit. It's an easy way to get a MM, PG, and combi melta into a deepstriking squad thats relentless. Wait, its the only way.

Yes they die to mass fire, but so does most anything that deep strikes.

The cost makes them truly terrible. I was about to go straight for the garbage button like I always do when ever this poll (inevitably) comes up but having a "Would you use them if they were cheaper" option gave me pause. If the price really reflected some of their massive draw backs and they were closer to something like assault marine or sternguard prices I might have to take another look. As it stands though they are essentially a suicide unit that is strong enough to maybe last one more turn than a drop pod full of marines but cost as nearly as much as terminators. For the price in the codex id rather just take the termies. Heres to hoping 6E space marines has them at a reasonable price because they have some really cool models.

Wow... you really had to say that? EVERYTHING dies to mass fire. LOTD are good. throw them at a unit full of power weapons, have them give cover for your Tac. You could go the suicide MM route.

A bit expensive for that route methinks.

Personally, I think they are just fine. I actually think GW did a good job balancing their background with their rules.

Can be very helpful if used correctly but have enough drawbacks to keep EVERYONE from using them.

They are LotD, not sternguard.

Hey, CPT Obvious, EVERYTHING dies to MASS fire.

I am waiting to paint mine until I have painted the rest of my SM army. I want plenty of practice so I can do those awesome models justice. I have the old 10 man squad box set and 10-11 of the new molds.

I second this.

In addition, I reckon that the fabled Legion of the damned should be more of a rag-tag
band of dudes who can pick and choose from an exotic armory. I'd expect guys who
appear and dissapear so mysteriously throughout different worlds to be taking back some
memento's with em for use in the battles to come. Or at least be able to use demonic
weapons or something. Theyre not exactly going by the codex astartes,

My two pennies. cheers!

I wasn't saying that they are exceptionally weak to mass-fire but they only have the same survivability to mass fire as a standard 16 point marine.

Slow and purposefull =/= relentless.

They do what they do well, however compared to the rest of the dex, they are way too over priced. I'd use them if they were cheaper, 5-10 points, or if they had FNP.
