Well after 8th ed WHFB getting me back into the hobby in a big way I was thinking of getting back into 40k, it has been a long time since I played any edition so this is a list designed to ease me back in and have fun with. I was tempted by Dark Elder but already have the C:CSM and figured it would be cheaper to collect.

Fluff is simple, some space puppies distraught at what happened to the 1k sons threw off their shackles to the Emperor to crusade in the name of Magnus (I will get flamed for this I know but I love the 1k sons and really like the space puppy kits)

HQ: Chaos lord; MoK, Daemon Weapon, Daemonic Steed (170)

Elites: 5x Chaos Terminators; Asp. Champ, Icon of Tzeentch, 2x Chainfist, 2x Combi-Meltas (235)

Troops; 10x Marines; Asp Champ, Power Weapon, 2xMeltaguns, Icon of Khorne, Rhino (230)

10x Marines; Asp Champ, Power Weapon, 2xMeltaguns, Icon of Khorne, Rhino (230)

9 x Thousand Sons + Sorcerer; Bolt of Change, Personal icon, Rhino (332)

5x Lesser daemons (65)

Heavy Support: Chaos Predator; Twin Linked LC, LC sponson (165)

Total = 1497

I think I have the basics covered, I have tried to fit in 1 troop choice per 500 points to ensure I can take objectives, Anti Tank seems the way list are going these days hence the melta guns and Pred Lascannons, Khorne lord and basic marines can also hold their own in CC. I don't like the oblit models and don't think they would fit with my fluff so although Oblits are the krak laced cookies for most Chaos lists want to avoid them in this build.

Any Thoughts? probably wont start this army 'til Winter time as got my WHFB armies to finish

Ditch the demon weapon, as you have a chance to screw yourself in combat. That is a pretty easy cut. If you want to try it, know the risks, but as soon as you roll a 1 on either of those two dice and you wound yourself, you will understand.

There is a reason why people take the dedicated troops, the main thing being moral reasons as they are fearless. 10 vanilla marines have a decent base leadership but as soon as they start taking wounds they start to crumble pretty quick because there is nothing like Stubborn, Fearless, or They Shall Know No Fear backing it up. It just comes down to the Icon of Chaos Glory for a re-roll as the best icon because it gives you the best chance to keep your troops in the fight... and that kills most fluff army builds besides Black Legion.

I strongly suggest you switch over to Plague Marines with 2 plasma guns and a power fist an a personal icon. Put them in a Rhino and give the Rhino a combi-melta. Call them something besides plage marines to fit your fluff. It is also very difficult to assault from a rhino, so read up on the rules and what you have to do to make it work.

The summoned Lesser Demons are questionable because they are generic demons and not anything cool. Lesser Demons are used more in mass than with small units. This type of list is called Demon Bomb, with the goal is to get back in the enemy rear area and flood them with several units of lesser demons. Best thing about them though is that they are fairly cheap and count as troops so they score. Bad thing about them is that they can't shoot, have limited stamina, and are random on thier arrival.

I would save the points and ditch the twin-linked Lascannon and leave the AC on the turret. Predators are good heavy support. Havocs with five guys and a IoCG can also be great heavy support as well.

The mindset in 40k right now is if you have 1 unit out there that is worthwhile to shoot at, it will get shot. It really helps to have redunancy where if you have two, one may survive long enough to get shots off or get into close combat. Seriously consider two HQs and two Heavy support units and stick with one troop every 500pts.

You have the right idea, your list shows you have played this game, but the Chaos Codex is also showing it's age and poor design. Chaos can be fun, but you the player need to make it fun. If your lucky, it can be competitive. But it will come down to you rolling well more than anything.

Thanks for the advice, it is very much appreciated, I did think of Plague marines, they are probably the best troops in the codex, the only way I could think of to make them fit in the Fluff is that they swore not to die until having atoned for their misdeeds, Nurgle would be happy to give them a reprieve from death so I could maybe make that work,

will play about with the list some more and repost with your suggestions, If I do drop the Lascannon on the pred would it be advisable to take the Havocs? I would be a bit light on Anti tank with just plasma guns on the plague marines.

Thanks again

You still have the lascannon sponsons, just not to turret. Also remember that Chaos Rhinos can have combi-weapons on them, so i suggest (if you have the points for it) to give your plasma gun troop's rhinos combi-meltas.

Besides CSMs, the cult troops do not need to be 10 man squads, drop them down to 7 or 8 men to give you some more points to play with.

If you want, re-work your list alittle and re-post it. Can give you a better handle on it then.
