Just play DirtsideII. The game is free and you can use any model you want.

To be honest there is a healthy disconnect between rules and model manufactures in 6mm sci-fi.

All the rule sets mentioned above are really stable and various companies make mini's that can be used in all of them.

However, if you want a rule set that is supported by the manufacturer of the mini's, with a progressing release schedule, I think Dystopian Wars by Spartan games is about it. And that's a steam punk rather than sci-fi game.

Most active is probably whatever your group is playing at the time.

We play a lot of Dirtside 2, FWC is gaining but some of us do not like the simplicity.

For a change we have been trying "When the Navy Walked" okay it Steampunk and not sci fi and we are using Brigade games excellent Land Ironclads, but the rules are slick, tactical and most of all everyone has fun.

This would be my comment as well. If you're going into 6mm, try to leave any "miniatures are for specific games" feelings at the door.

My advice would be to search through the various makers out there and find the miniatures you like best, Buy them and then try out various rulesets. Future War Commander is fairly widely accepted and is a good place to start. My gaming club uses it for our rebased Mechwarrior minis (10mm) and we enjoy it. However, there are a number of other good rulesets out there and more being released.

My other advice would be to check out The Miniatures Page and MiniatureReview.com . I love me some Dakka, but you will find alot more info on 6mm there than you will here.

Dystopian Wars is a good bet if you want a supported game system with it's own model line.

I'll second Dystopian Wars, unless you're looking for something like Epic where you have staggering amounts of wee little infantry. If that's the case, I have no idea what games are out there.

One other factor that you should be aware of is that it's rather unlikely that you'll be able to guess what 6mm games (if any) are being played around you unless you ask around. Unless they are from your area, it's doubtfull that some random person here on Dakka is going to be able to tell you.

Ask at your local game stores and forums, usually the store employees or manager can give you some idea of what's been selling and what people are playing. If the local game store only carries 1 or 2 games, that's probably what folks are going to be playing.

In the end though, your best bet is probably to build two armies yourself and then try and find opponents. When a friend and I wanted to get our club into small scale (10mm) gaming, we found deals on units (MW figs) and then resold them in premade armies at-cost to our members.

You almost have to be your own game promoter, but on the positive side, once you've gotten a few folks interested, you'll have started a new player community and that can be a source for players for other less-common games.

I'd say the best rules are still Epic Armageddon. If you don't like the models, then use something else! Honestly, it's sleek and fast with out being over abstract.
