If I am using five drop pods, how many get deployed first turn? The book says half, so do I deploy three, two, or is it my choice?

3, as you round up fractions equal to or greater than 50%. Maths tells you this.

You round up. It says this in the same line as it says to divide the number of pods in half.

Thank you. And while yes, I realize that math tells me one thing, experience as a gamer told me another. (Since every system I've ever played in, D&D, White Wolf, Pinnacle, etc, all either 'always round down' or 'always round to screw'.)
Just providing an explanation for why I asked what now appears to me as a bone-headed question.

Rounding isn't trivial - rounding errors caused the first mars probe to miss by a few million kilometers, 17 billion dollars wasted
|
7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Lol, that wasn't rounding, that was because half the team used metric and the other used imperial and they didn't tell each other. Silly astro-engineers and their wacky hijinks.

Maths has nothing to do with it,
the codex says 1/2, rounding any fractions up.

Anyway, ye, it was something that me and my friends comented on, that 40k is diffrent to most RP systems. Which means we have to check the rules on a regular basis to make sure we are doing it the right way after so long playing D&D.

perhaps thats because 40k isn't a role playing game.
its a Table Top Wargame. If you look at other TTWGs you will see it isn't much different or more complex. Flames of War(WW2 game done by Battlefront) uses many similer mechanisims, except the game is entirely based on a 1d6 system(no 2D6 tests anywhere)
Warmachine is based on a 2D6 system, but it isn't any less complex(less models on the board, but still)

I realize 40k isn't an RPG, but since I don't play any other wargames (and I'm unlikely to start) I was drawing on the nearest personal experience to make an assumption. The relative distance between the experience and the actuality was what led me to post the question in the first place, and fortunately my assumption was wrong.
And no, 40k is actually quite a bit simpler than most RPG's, and so are most other wargames that I've seen. I totally agree with that point. A wargame only has to have rules for one thing (combat, really) whereas an RPG has to cover pretty much everything.

perhaps,
I never could understand RPGs that weren't on a PC very well so I can't speak for DnD and other similer game's complexity.
I can play Munchkin and thats about it
I would guess that they are more complicated. some friends told me they stopped playing DnD because the expansions were basically becoming pointless.
One guy actually took every expansion that was out at the time and found that, if you got every concievable bonus/penelty possable, your stats would never fluctuate more then 5 or 6 in either direction.
