I am a tyranid player and my army is based of the endless swarm but after some recent games I am reconsidering the endless swarm because they lack the ability to breack open veichles. So what should I do bulk up for a monstrous horde or more infintry firepower? Should I have a shooty army or an Assault army? I am foucused against tau and my army is based around 1500 points.

Actually you will find that the best lists have both in them because the tervigon is the strongest unit in the dex right now, it is a MC synapppase etc creature that gives us swarmy massive amount of damage, hive guards are strongest AV, tervigons usually as HQ then 2 as troops and a trygon with say 6 hive guard and genestealers and you are looking at a pretty solid list.

Maybe if there are any monstrous creatures that can be taken as troops or fast attack (harpies?) that can mount some decent enough firepower will do great against anything. Don't get cocky with their toughness or saves, as armies like MEQ, tau, necrons will cut them down if left out in the open (my tau have proven that )
Listen to Dave_Nz's advice, too. That really sums up everything that you need.
BTW, thanks Dave_Nz for your advice on fighting nids on my own discussion page. Those tactics came in handy.

Rule #1 on Nids is make sure whatever you take works with each of the other units in your list and supports them in some fashion. After that, generally I've been seeing the meta pushing more towards favoring swarm armies. This can go right out the window against some armies, but really any build in Nids has some form of hard counter to it. With swarms however, there seem to be less hard counters than an MC heavy army since the same weapons that are generally good against MCs are the same weapons you see spamed a lot to counter all the mech out there. Also the last two armies to be released (DE and GK) really can do horrible things to MCs. Now this of course can vary depending on the local meta game in your area or gaming group, but it fits most metas from what I've seen.

If you can mount long range-ish weapon it will surprise almost anyone. If you can't then make it CC-ie.

Like dave_NZ said, both is best. A carnifex in a Mycetic Spore and with two sets of scything talons will bust open almost anything.

"As I looked into its dead black eyes, I saw the terrible sentinence it had in place of a soul. Behind that was the steel will of its leader. Further still I could feel its primogenitor coldly assessing me from the void. And looking back from the deepest recesses of the aliens mind I perceived what I can describe only as an immortal hunger.
We can slay the tyranids on our worlds, blast their fleets from space, grind their armies to torn and ruined fragments. But their hunger? That is beyond our ability to slay."

Maybe if you can't immediately decide, go with some more warriors, or maybe even some shreiks, as having wings is just as good as a mycetic spore, just cheaper (I like to use crisis suits for my tau, which work in the same fashion as shrieks). just wondering, but am I spelling shrieks correctly
Anyway, if you think about it, warriors, shrieks and their equivalents like lictors and maybe even 'stealers are like a cross of infantry and mc, so they can be more versatile than either nidzilla or swarms.

p.s. Pinoypower, let's do another game once your army has been reconfigured. I love killing bugs! Especially evil ones!

Yeah, just looked that up! OOPS!
Now, I'm considering editing my post. Should I? Should I not? AHHH! -head explodes-
Sorry, my inner perfectionist got loose.

Yeah, my tau will be reconfigured to more efficiently do their work with pest control.
Going to Massachusetts in 3 days, so I won't be on Dakka for a while once I leave. Hopefully, I'll find something good at the Whiz Store in Westboro. (Hammerhead?)

Hey Pinoypower! Just found out (not really) if you take a large swarm army with not so great toughness you're completely hosed against Salamanders led by Forge Father Vulcan He'stan. I'm talking about the chapter tactics. It means Salamanders flame template weapons, meltas and plasma guns are all twin linked at no extra cost. This might get dicy for you to killykavekommando. See ya in two years. I will now go eat some chili.

I think with the current firepower of the new dexes, viable Bug strategies are:

Outflanking or infiltrating armies or those that come in from reserve. The main weakness with either of these will be armies that also reserve and are mobile.

Some options would be a Hive commander Flyrant with 2 deathspitters, Zoathropes in pods, Deathleaper (counter offset JAWS and other Librarian abilities, and to make late game OBJ grabs), Genestealers, gargoyles. Yes, Hive Guard are good, their range is limited and trying to out shoot a mech'd up army with these guys is necessary.

Any bug list I make leaves me feeling inadequately prepared for a Take-on-all-comers list.

Before GK's came out I used to run stealers...lots of 'em and in big broods too (20 in a unit). 2 of these with toxin sacs comes in at 680pts. Now, for support 2 tervigons with Toxin Sacs and Adrenal Glands in the Troops slot and 2x10 broods of gaunts. Now so far we have filled our Troops choices...at 1170pts. Now we get to the fun stuff. I usually would take 2 dakkafexes and 2 Primes for my HQ and a heavy slot. It's a real powerhouse and can shrug off most of what your opponent shoots at them between FnP and armour/cover saves. Follow up with Hive Guard, Zoanthropes or Ymgarls.

Of course the HQ, Elites and Heavy slots really depend on what you want to do. Sometimes I like to go Swarmlord with Ymgarls...combining their abilities makes them vicious on the charge. Or maybe a T-fex or 2 is in order. Or just 9 Hive guard. With stealers and gaunts as your base cost you can really go a little wild with the other choices until you find the combination that works best for you...though at least 1 unit of Hive Guard is recommended by most.

Now this list really relies on it's speed. The Stealers infiltrating really scare the hell out of a lot of opponents. Considering they are going to be in combat turn 2 they will be the focus of some fierce firepower. But that's ok...between FnP and cover saves they should do reasonably well. It's also a good idea to spread out and chain link a Tervigon with a couple of stealers at the back. This way you can avoid psychic hoods a bit better and you are less likely to overkill when you assault.

So yeah...a mixed list tends to do well, but the absolute best will include at least 2 Tervigons since they synergize so well with the little bugs.

I am finding the lack of invul on my MCs to be a real hindrance of late. I will keep the tervigons as I don't intend them to get into CC, but am leaning towards rending claws/elites choices etc rather than HS MCs.

Genestealers come in 2 kinds of broods. Large infiltrating ones or smaller (6-10) outflanking ones. Don't be tempted to outflank large broods...the large unit size makes them unwieldy and a smart opponent can and will hamper their movement the turn they come in. I go for larger broods as they take advantage of catalyst a lot better and are ready to assault early, which may not be the case if you outflank them. Both combine really well with Ymgarls.

I don't think this really qualifies for a necro. For 1 the OP has continued commenting since it was re-opened and people are now a bit more familiar with GK's and so it brings another dimension to gaming with nids.

Just throwing in my bit here from an IG perspective. Outflanking genestealers always keep stationary/shooty armies nervous.

And you can't have too many Tervigons.
