Pretty much the above.

I have a 5 man assault squat and it got obliterated the first time I used it without touching anyone. I figured with a 12" movement they'd be a star player.

it's set up with;

Sarge with SS/PF
3 Bolt pistols
1 Plasma Pistol

Well a 5-man Space Marine Assault Squad is almost usless, unless you can get into close combat as fast as you can. A 10-man squad with jump packs or Deep Strike rules gets you there faster, then rely on Rhino transport. Cover helps get your unit to a target, if they have a Line of Site block (vie building/terrain). Running Assault Troops in the open gets them shot very fast, keep in in cover as much as possible. Best I can say for Space Marines as Chaos just runs strait to their target and kills in close combat.

Chaos rules you all drool! Blood for the Blood God!
10,000 pts Black Legion
2,000 pts Traitor Catchian Guard (1067th).
8,000 point Sam Hain Eldar.
2,000 pts Squat Biker Force.
1,500 Orc Hoard (painting for a friend).

Yeah, get them behind a transport or hug cover, jump them, run em and get into assault, they sit out in the open and they get picked apart by fire.
