Hi all, my friend is starting a dwarf army and we have both fallen in love with the Avatars of War Berserker Dwarves http://www.avatars-of-war.com/eng/web/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66&Itemid=63

And we were wondering if anyone has found a use for slayer units, they seem very hitty but way to fragile, though i may be looking at them the wrong way.

Well, they can be up to str 7, (ajusting str to 5, great weapon) which means a large unit could kill a dragon but they cannot survive any return fire, and are low initative to boot. All in all they are abit over priced, but are a fun fluffy unit.

EagleArk, I don't think that's right. Strength adjustment is made *after* bonus for great weapon. This is pretty clearly laid out in the slayer axes rule.

That said- I think there's some real potential in slayers. The MR of Grungni is probably close to mandatory, though for a little extra protection at range. However, the unbreakable, rampable strength, and extra attacks are pretty huge.

I need to revamp the Relentless list to keep myself from going insane, so I'm taking a close look at slayers. I think they especially benefit from an anvil's ability to pick how and where combats occur.

There's an English fella that happened upon a pretty cool Dragonslayer build (+2I, flaming weapon) that is cheap, but effective for removing regen from a beastie before the slayers swing.

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

Keeping them near a hammerer or Iron Breaker unit with Grungni is good for letting them survive to combat (which, due to all the damned AP shots in the game, is required anyway). That cheap slayer is great, and will help mulch a Hydra, potentially before it even strikes. I'm confused why you even bother with the extra I though. Isn't I5 enough, really? It's faster than any monsters I've seen in quantity (HPAs and Hydras) and will help put the hurt on units of Treekin as well.

It is cheap, and a great addition to the slayer unit to help keep them in line. Maybe my next 2500pt list will have no WM at all, and will have to include a unit of these baddies...

Often I have imagined running them in units of about 18, with no command at all (save giant slayers x3) and burying the Uberslayer build (Smiting, Might, and Fire. Fits perfectly on the Demon Slayer and pumps out 4 S8 flaming attacks against monsters, each wound doing D6 wounds)

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

Well i personally love the slayers, they are great for combat and can wipe out pretty good units and tie up great units for a few turns. The obvious bad part here is that they have 0 saves so they will die very quickly against any kind of shooting and don't always survive a good amount of time in combat. But id say that if your looking for some thing that can take on almost any unit that comes its way then you should absolutly get them but nothing less that 25 slayers in a unit because they die so quickly and also keep them out of and shooting. In a game I played for fun about 15 slayers killed 17 black orks in a single round of combat so i would absolutely recommend them if you want something to destroy monster units

you'd like that in the next dwarf book they make them better by giving them HKB and a 5++ save saying its indomitable will (or courage of grimnir) something along those lines

Nah, its just the beard save.

That aside, I like slayers over a lot of other dwarf units for the same reason I like my dark eldar. (Stay with me here...) You can count on hitting just about everything just as hard as you would anything else. It makes them multi-purpose, and really easy to adapt new tactics with them. You might not be wounding on twos (though if you have the chance I would), but you almost always have the chance of wounding on 4s with a bucket load of attacks. Anvil really makes them shine though, between wrath and ruin and the i-charge-rune that I can't remember it helps them get where you want them to be.
