I think I read that simple green is recommended for paint removal.

Yup, this horse is regularly beat to death. Simple Green or Purple Power are very acceptable paint removal items. Soak overnight + toothbrush/cleaning brush = almost new models.
However, I have has a recent batch of metal models accrue some weird kind of corrosion after sitting in Simple Green for about a month. Looked a lot like battery corrosion, heavily built up (almost covering the models completely) whitish and kind of fuzzy. After cleaning it off with baking soda, it left a whitish residue that didn't affect the detail of the model and didn't show after priming. Any ideas what it could have been?

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Oxide coating? Or some other -ide, -ite or -ate.
Not ALL metallic oxide by products are destructive. Chemical interaction between the solvent and the metals? Doesn't have to be an acid if you know the relevant chem.

WarOne has a great article here showing how to strip miniatures. You shpuld try this first. This is how I do it, and it works great.
If that doesn't work out, there are more aggressive methods listed here.
