Hi, I just finished this, this is my first ever campaign story writing. I love writing fiction but have never done it for a campaign. This also covers some background for my tyranid splinter fleet, my mates anti-prisoner/riot guard, my other mates spec ops guard and my other mates chaos/traitor guard army. So yeah, I asked them what the background was to their armies and they all said none and then said I could write some as I do like writing this stuff. So, I integrated it into the campaign. This all means that I wrote a campaign overall backgound story and the background to 4 armies all at once so for give me for any mistakes I've made. So enjoy... The planet Dorn IV is a penal planet first and foremost; however, it is also a mining planet. The majority of the population are prisoners, murderers and thieves, when they first arrived some of them may have still held some human values but after a few days of being on the planet, most are taken straight to the mining prisons 30-40 miles under the surface. Once there, they are forced to work 14 hour days of manual labour extracting the precious ore. They have to live with other criminals who have been down there long enough to lose all human values, they have to be cruel to survive. Every day, any new prisoners who held onto some morsel of humanity are killed, it’s dark in the mines and the guards can’t be everywhere at once. Every single day, they could find up to 20 bodies stabbed and beaten, and then another 50 – 60 simply go missing; they leave to work in the mines but are not returned… and that’s just in one sector. Due to this high murder count, along with a slightly lower ‘natural’ death (usually falling rocks) count and the continuous need to expand the mines to make all this worth it, approximately 250-300 new criminals are sent down every day. Dorn IV is unique in that it is a penal planet first and foremost yet most of the normal citizens have never seen a prison. There are very few prisons on the surface as nearly all prisoners are transferred below surface within 3 days of arrival, the lucky ones within a week. Also, the prisons are kept well out of the way so that the people are happy. Of the citizens on Dorn IV, 10% work as prison guards, they can spend up to 6 months at a time working under the surface, although it pays well. Besides the official rules state that prisoners must be brought up only at least once every 20 years (damn humanitarians wrecking the penal system) and most don’t live that long. The next 80% of the citizen’s population work in the mining industry from the surface; organising deliveries, payments, expansions, etc. and the last 10% work selling in general trade for the others to keep the planet going. The criminals have provided their fair share of problems throughout the planet’s history; riots, uprisings, refusing to work, etc. mostly below surface but there have been a couple of attempts above surface. However, none of these ‘problems’ have been anything the especially trained PDF couldn’t handle. The PDF for Dorn IV is essentially split in two, about 30% of the force remain underground (these are separate from the standard prison guards) while the other 70% remains topside. Either group can be completely transferred to the other’s position within a week if needed though. The Dorn IV PDF is also unique in that you need to go through two sets of training to join; the standard as would be expected of a mining planet, then an especially designed extra for quelling riots and uprisings of prisoners not only on the surface but underground as well. The Government of Dorn IV have become more concerned ever since a prisoner broke out of a surface prison and almost made it off the planet due to synchronised riots above and below surface, after the three-day riot underground 8376 prisoners were either missing or found dead, it is unknown how many the PDF killed and how many the prisoners themselves killed. Since that event approximately 83 years ago the Government has started using its wealth to implement a new special force specifically designed to move in fast and deal a hard blow before things get out of hand. They also specialise in stealth and assassinations in case things do get out of hand. Since their invention however, they have spent most of their service fighting for other nearby planets against tau in the area. The tau’s hierarchy towards ethereals made them perfect targets for assassination or hostile extraction. So, other nearby planets who had had some small problems with tau before decided they would borrow (for a fee) the new spec ops force to assassinate the tau leader trying to indoctrinate them into the empire and it blew out into a full scale war once the ethereal was dead. Since then the spec ops force has become officially recognised by the Imperium and made into an Imperial Guard regiment, albeit a small one. They are currently assisting in the nearby tau war again although they have been used on several different crusades now. The Current Situation Inquisitors have recently noticed a splinter fleet of Kraken moving towards the system. They have not issued any official warnings just yet as they cannot be sure whether it will hit the imperium or the tau in the system and they don’t want the tau to get any forewarning as it appears that they haven’t realised yet. They have however, told the Imperial Fists what they know, and have also found out that it is cut off from Kraken at the moment so it needs to feed to support itself. Therefore, if it could be defeated on one planet, it would be wiped out as lost the ability to reproduce. Accordingly, the Imperial Fists have moved a massive force into the sector consisting of the complete 1st, 2nd and 7th companies, along with aspects of the 3rd and 10th companies as well as the armoury. To stop panic and suspicions they claim to be moving in to combat the tau. They have scheduled their arrival at the same time as the tyranids so they can be reacted to easily. On Dorn IV there have been more problems with prisoners lately as a group of chaos worshippers were discovered within the prison recently. The worry now is that there may be more. Therefore, the PDF is now being deployed with 75% of the force beneath surface to discover and destroy any more chaos threats. I know, it doesn't lead straight to fighting but you can imagine what happens and I still need to expand on the chaos a bit more but I'll probably do that through special missions.
