Thats the question.. So can the novalite take a special weapon that other "honor guard" can take such as a flamer or melta gun or even the chapter banner, or is he stuck with the standard gear because his name is "sanguinary novalite" and not "honor guard" --- or -- do the options listed refer to the "honor guard" unit as a whole.

No, only Honour Guard can take things that say, "Any Honour Guard can take. . ."
The hint is in Unit Composition. It says 4 Honour Guard and 1 Sanguinary Novitiate. The wargear has to allow the Sanguinary Novitiate to take something.
