All I have at the moment is the Necron Battleforce or whatever it's called (28 Warriors, 7 Scarab Swarms and 3 Destroyers). I decided to build this army up before deploying to Afghanistan, and later saw they are getting revised. I', trying to keep abreast of the rumors and have no interest in purchasing models that will have no use in 6 months (ie Pariahs??).
Keeping in mind the changes to come, what would be recommended as a next step? I was thinking maybe another battle force, a Lord of some sort (kinda need a HQ) and Monolith?
I wanted to search for what work out as FUN lists for now. I'm well aware that necrons are not really competitive now. I just wanted an army with fewer models to start sooner (I left my old armies home). I tried to search forums but that doesn't seem to work on military networks.
ANY advice is appreciated.

Anything that is deemed competitive or semi competitive on this should be both staying with the crons and allow you to build up some fun forces. Destroyer wing, Destroyer Spam + Mono, and Wraith wing tend to be a favorite fun competitive armies for around 2000 points.

I'd also like to recommend the Nightmare Shroud, Veil of Darkness, and Warscythe Lord. Very fun against opponents who have units with lower leadership.

monolith, you can't go wrong.
its gonna be one of the most powerful thing out there unless GW decide to have S11 weapons LOL
You will find that, its near indestructable and can really mess around with your opponents tactic since an huge monolith in the middle of the board is difficult to avoid

Depends on the points value you play at for the Lith.
It is a huge point sink that doesn't count towards Phase Out, but it is also a flying bunker o' death I usually take one at anything over 1250 pts.
I'd buy one anyway- they're very cool, and are a hefty painting project (TONS of detail on the bottom face that no-one gets to see...why?? )
I would pick up a battleforce or two, a destroyer lord and a walking lord.

I am in a similiar boat, i wanted a new army and always wanted necron, so i just bought a new battleforce, monolith, and necron lord w/ res orb. I also just bought a squad of immortals because they look sweet and are rated competitive. I am not worried about the new codex because I am willing to bet that most if not all of the old units will be kept and new units added. But for now i would go with monolith, its a necron centerpiece and i dont think they are going to remove or really change it

Just guessing at the rumors, I wouldn't buy immortals (supposed to be a new model, bigger, termy sized bases), and I'd be wary of Destroyers/Heavy Destroyers. I love the model, and have 15 personally, but I've heard they are getting a new kit at minimum, and if losing their jetbike status, could be redesigned even more significantly. Then again, playing with old edition models can be a fun draw too.
From the battle box, you need to decide which direction you want to go. I think the most competitive lists (despite what DoP says) are destroyer based, however wraith wings can be fun, unexpected, and fluffy. In either case, there is a significant investment because of the price of models: $20 for each one.
It's a tough decision with so much in the balance in the next update. Buy used, whichever way you go, is my suggestion because so much could change in a few months.

are wraiths going to stay at 20 a piece or do you think that they will bundle a 2-3 in a box and bring it down to about 45-50 dollars? i hope the 2nd one

Don't buy destroyers don't buy tomb spiders, or immortals. All 3 of those are getting a new plastic kit come codex release time. If you can spare it I wouldn't buy warriors either, they're also getting a new plastic kit with new weapon choices. Monolith is a safe investment, and so is a Necron lord.
Don't kid yourself. Necrons are very competitive if the necron player is competent and they're playing a shooty WBB focused list. Bringing units though the monolith portals allow a double WBB save, and when using tomb spiders to cover squads being fully knocked down and saving them you'll end up keeping most your squad even if they all got knocked down. So, it also messes with your opponents psychology when they kill a whole squad and you bring it back up, and shoot them with it.

Your shooty is 24'' in range, and is best at 12''. WBB is a 4+, assuming there is another model of the same type nearby. If the unit gets killed and there isn't, then too bad. Tomb spyders do help this, but are really fragile themselves. If Necrons are so Very Competive how come you almost never see Necrons at Tournaments
The strategy above works well against some armies, but against anything with a fast assault capability the enemy will go from 'out of range' to 'in your face' in one turn, and then sweep you hard. Other armies will just stand off and pieplate you.
Destroyerwing and Wraithwing are sturdier, especially with Lith support, but don't kid yourself Necrons are not as good these days.
A competent player can get wins out of them, especially against people who have never played necrons, and get demoralized wheh the unit regains half it's losses, but any competent adversary that knows about Necrons has an edge.
Personally i like being the underdog. It encourages me to use my brain, instead of just my dice rolling hand...
