I doubt a specific number was given...
I don't remember them being bigger than average or smaller than average compared to the other...

In the book Promethean sun, it does give a vague idea that they were slightly less numerous than other Legions

Actually, there has never been a specific number given. they were, however, considered to be one of the smaller legions IIRC. This resulted from their slow and methodical training and recruitment methods. I can't find a source of hand to support this.

Well it's unlikely the number was ever stable. They are an active military formation. It would have gone up and down.
On some stuff they do need to be more specific however.

I've read most of the HH books and in none of them there is any mention of the strength of the salamanders legion. I haven't read Promethean Sun yet. I guess there are some hints concerning the size of this legion in this book.

If I remember correctly, optimal size for a legion was ten thousand. Salamanders were slightly less numerous than that, but I have never seen any numbers more specific than that.

EC are supposed to be the smallest Legion at 80,000. Salamanders were smallish, so probably about 80,000-100,000.
