I was playing a multiplayer apoc sized game yesterday. I was in a situation where I had a 5 man term assault sqd with a term chaplain being assaulted by a berzerker sqd with chaos lord. I lost the WHOLE assault sqd to a single round of close combat beating by the berzerkers, however, the Chaplain stayed strong and piled in till the next turn. On my turn I launched an assault with a tactical squad. My question is this; would the tactical squad benefit from the Chaplain (Liturgies of Blood, Fearless, etc) even though he was already engaged in battle and the tact sqd was just starting their assault?

The Chaplain confers his assault bonuses to his unit, if he was not attached to the Tactical squad, then he does not confer any bonuses to them.

What the guy above said, there's two things to this:

a: The Chaplain is not attached to the Tac Marines.
b: Liturgies only works on the turn in which the Chaplain assaults. If he is locked in combat then he can't use it.

If the tac squad had been within 2" of the chaplain at end of movement phase then the chaplain would have joined.

However, even if that was the case, the chaplain must assault for the bonus to be triggered.

You cannot join units that are engaged in combat, from memory
