Okay guys,

i have written some rules for a small scale skirmish harry potter duel (including 27 different spells) at the moment and a solid basis for simple rules and some characters.

However, i still need new ideas, critiques and play testing to be done-drop me a pm or post if you are interested!

The rule book i am writing (which includes all tokens and cards for the spells, actions etc) is going to approximately 40 pages.

Don't worry, the rules are simple- there is just a wide choice of characters including

4 factions-Hogwarts students,order of the phoenix,death eaters,evil at hogwarts.

Each faction has 3 fighters (which are increasingly better, but cost more to hire) with unique skills, such as the ability to use an item from weasleys wizard weezes. This has taken about 48 hours of my life so far ( 48 solid hours over a week)

so i would really like some people to play test it, if you and a buddy can play in real life, great, if not, i am lookin into getting a vassal program made so you can duel eachother.

The game includes an intuitive dueling system with nearly 30 different spells, 20 special characters and 12 classes of character (who you can use as stock or randomise stats) for a different game EVERY time!

also, if anything ever happens to this (which i would like to think it might, but with copyright issues, it may not) any and all people who help will get a free solid copy

I am very interested in this and would gladly playtest this for you. Shoot me a PM. For an idea you could do a lot of fun things for item cards from selections from Weasley's Wizard Weezes. Like instant darkness powder is an obvious one to use!

Anyone interested in helping...

Drop me a pm, tell me what you can do-all skills can be put to use (we even need novice gamers to read the rules, see if they make sense from a novice point of view) and if you want a copy of the rules- do not forget to add an email adress.

Please do not send them on to anyone else, i want to know who has a copy of the rules.

I was interested by this, because my local wargames club is developing a Potter-themed skirmish game based on the various clashes played out "off screen" in the Deathly Hallows.

Although I'm not involved in the design work, I've been playtesting and the game has some interesting mechanics, not least because the majority of characters move predominantly by Apparating, so movement is almost unlimited.

Other than Apparating, though, spellcasting is a little challenging at times. I'd be interested to compare game mechanics, especially for spell-casting and spell effects.

I have not used apparition in mine, as i figure you will be too busy fighting to do it

as for spellcasting, each spell has a casting value which must be beaten to cast, which can be improved/made more difficult by movement/bracing etc (and also, every character has a power statistic, which gives a positive modifier constantly, so Dumbledore has power 7 and gets +3 to his casting roll

That sounds logical, although I'm not sure that negative modifiers for movement etc are predicated by the source material. Perhaps a positive modifier for not moving would be more intuitive? But I suppose that's just approaching the issue in the same way from another direction.

IIRC, the version being tested in our club is similar in that each spell has a casting value, but the caster's power stat indicates how many dice they roll to cast, selecting the highest two. Thus, taking the same example, Dumbledore rolls, IIRC, five dice (matched only by Voldemort himself), whilst the more powerful wizards on each side tends to have four, normal adults 3 and students only 2. An excruciatus, for example, requires a score of 12 to cast.

Now I'm not a fan of fistfuls of dice, but I did rather like this mechanic, because it introduces a subsidiary mechanic by which certain characters can either remove power dice from opponents in range or even "steal" power dice (the only example I can think of is Bellatrix LeStrange, who enjoys "power from pain" and steals a power dice from any opponent wounded in the same turn).

Mind you, this has led to a rather intricate turn sequence, in which it's quite easy to get lost and forget which character is due to move/attack/cast.

What turn sequence mechanism are you using? IGOUGO? Integrated turns? Or some hybrid?
