Subject: Multiple Combats - Defenders React to new attackers?

Hi all,
My friend and I had a game the other day and we ended up in a multiple combat situation.
My Stormboyz were in combat with a squad of his Blood Angels when a 2nd squad of his Angels charged.
Now, he insisted that all 'unengaged' models move to his 2nd squad and attack them, per the 'Defenders React' rule.
By this he meant that all models that were not in b2b were not 'engaged', whereby I called a halt because I wasnt sure.
We looked at the rules and played on being that 'unengaged' models = models not in b2b contact, but I didnt really understand it fully because the 2 rules together arnt very clear (to me) when used together.
Did we do the right thing?
Do my boyz have to break off if they (to my understanding) they were already 'engaged' by being 2" from a b2b model?
Thanks all.

Defenders react follows the same rules as assaulting, therefore any model not in btb must attempt to get into btb with an enemy model.

So what defines an 'engaged' model?
I know that might sound a bit dense, but multiple combats confuse me.
EDIT: I've just re-read and re-read the rules on this.
Engaged models are those within 2" that can lend attacks.
So they 'can fight' and are engaged and lending attacks, then the unit assaulted from the flank, they'll move there to be in b2b contact because they are not already in b2b?

Essentially Yes.
Every phase you pile in / react, which requires you to follow as many of the assault rules as you can, meaning anyone not in btb moves to try to get into btb, everyonie not within 2" has to get to at least 2", and so on.

Thanks for that.
I'm not as newbie as I sound but I've been a little rusty on some of the rules since I've re-started gaming 40k.

Thats fine - the assaults section is very different to 4th edition, as it is designed to make combats more brutal and shorter in duration - hence the changes to morale checks for losing, etc.
