I want to start VC at some point, but having looked through the book, to my fairly un-trained eye for strategy,( I usually play armies like DE which are much easier to use), with Fear being Nerfed and all, I can't see any great possible armies.
How can I make them as Strategically effective as possible? I'd be getting an army of about 1500pts, is there a good list for that value?

Help Appreciated.

Hey there,
my friend has been playing VC for a while and this is what we got.

Ghouls are the absolutely best core but you will need some banners for blood and glory.
Keep the zombies for summoning but don't field them at the start.
The grave guard death star(gw,+1 to hit banner ,bsb with drakenhof banner can be awesome) but you should look out for Test or die spells.
If you want to play skeletons keep them Hw+shield as their attacks suck and you want to keep their parry.
A vampire with the blood drinker weapon in a unit of Blood knights can be awesome as you heal dead dudes.
One thing i find awesome about vc is how customizable and diverse the vampires can be.
Varghulfs in pairs are usually a good choice.
The black coach depends on your taste i've heard good and bad things about it.
You can probably find some more info here http://vampirecounts.net/

Hope this was helpfull

In small games, I bunker my general behind the fighting blocks and gear him to cast. In bigger games, I gear him to cast and fight (2+ armor, 4+ ward).

Always run at least 2 big blocks, so you can out grind the enemy, taking advantage of the ability to replace troops.

Ghouls are great, skeletons are ok.
Both are awesome with a lore of death vampire who drops a soul blight bomb. Seriously, -1S and -1T to a big area is game winning.

I play VC and everything I have read so far I find to be correct. I always play 2 units of ghouls. I bunker my Vampire general in a unit of skeletons. I really like to use Vargulfs and the Black Coach as well. I also always use a unit of GG with full command and A wight King BSB with the Drakenhoff banner. I also occassionally use Wraiths.

I win frequently using these units, though I am hopeful that whenever the VC gets a new army book more units will be viable.

Good luck and have fun!

Are you better off running Grave Guard with Great Weapons or Hand Weapon/Shield?

Tottaly agreed on everything. Im playing my grave guards on a unit of 20 with great weapons. If the game is big enough i field one more unit with hand weapon/shields. Im going nowhere without my blood knights group of course most of the times a unit of 8. Sometimes im using on a big group of skeletons, a vampire with tomb blade so as i can get some more skeletons back to life. Ghouls is the way to go indeed. Poisoned attacks and 4 toughness is something rare in our army Im also using corpse carts 1 or 2 depending the game size. The always strike first is really cool. The varghulf is a tough fighter tho you have to take care of it or else is going to die fast.

Are Necromancer's and Wight Kings ever worth taking or just Vampires?

Wight kings are decent at BSB since they got killing blow and 3 wounds. Necros arent too bad if you want a cheap scroll caddie or something

Yes.

T5 W3, killing blow hero, who comes with heavy armor and a shield for 75 points? Sign me up.
55 point wizard who picks a spell? Also very good.
I usually want 2 (3 in big games) models with the vampire rule to keep the army marching. This means if I go varghulf, I'll take necro and wight king over vampire.

Keep in mind that taking both a necro and a wight king is usually cheaper than just taking a single vampire. The combo casts just as well, but fights much better. The casting half of the duo can hide, the fighting half can be the road block.

Ok. I really like the Wight Kings (The Fluff and rules, not the models) and I might take a 1 Vampire, 1 Wight King combo and try to make the best of it. A Skeleton with exra armour painted in an ethereal tone would do for a model. Thanks for all the feedback people, I'll be posting a list in the Army List Section, it would be nice if you could take a look. Thanks,

Lokir.
