That's right people, it's a napoleon dynamit quote...anyway, I decided to start a tyranid army, I have really been digging the models and fluff lately, and I have never played a horde type of army so I thought I should just go for it...also, I came up with some fluff while mowing my lawn today, I plan on adding to the background of the army. I want to come up with a name for the planet, the PDF troopers, and even paint up some PDF troopers eventually. Eventually I want to come up with some other little side stories that lead to different characters and models. Anyway, here is the background.

A splinter from hive fleet behemoth, hive fleet ______, arrived in a nearby system without warning. The splinter fleet contained only a relatively small amount of ships, and as such was able to avoid any long range detection. The fleet descended on the only inhabited planet in the system, a planet covered in massive, densely populated cities. The planet boasted a large and well trained PDF force who had seen recent action in quelling a rebellion that threatened to overthrow local imperial rule. Order had soon been restored, however, and the planet was once again a productive and relatively safe place. The local populace, after learning of the small size of the hive fleet, deemed it unnecessary to call for aid. The PDF and militia was rallied, and the planet was prepared to meet the fleet of xenos invaders.
The fleet descended, and the initial attack took a staggering toll on the imperial forces. After months of brutal fighting, the bloodied regiments of PDF and militia drove the tyranids off the planet due to the hive fleet’s relatively small size. The invasion left the planet in ruins, especially the capital city where the fighting had been most intense. Believing the tyranids to have been utterly defeated, the populace began to rebuild their cities in earnest, as well as celebrating their glorious victory.
The hive mind learned from the previous attack, however, and was merely lying in wait, spawning new and more efficient bio-forms to unleash on the population. The second wave was unleashed onto the planet, and the population soon learned that the enemy they now faced was deadlier than ever before. The hive mind had learned that, during the assault, it’s swarm had been most effective during the planet’s very long dark period, a result of the its orbital trajectory around the system’s sun. As a result, the second wave of tyranids were better adapted to night fighting. More lictors and genestealers were spawned, creatures able to move through the dark and tear their prey to pieces without a sound. They also developed darker skin and carapace, which camouflaged the creatures better in ruined cities and in the dark, and glowing green eyes. Xeno-biologists believe their newly formed eyes to be an adaptation for penetrating the pitch black of the planet’s dark cycle. Imperial forces have come to dread the sight of the eyes of their foes, as few have looked into them and survived.
Since the second wave has been unleashed, all sense of discipline and order is dying as quickly as the population. Lictors stalk the cities during the dark cycle, slaughtering citizens and soldiers alike, leaving bloody and gruesome trails of death in their wake. As each dark cycle ends, evidence is found of the lictors’ presence. Countless scenes of disembowelment and other mutilations are found in alleys or empty shells of abandoned buildings. These scenes have become commonplace, and such is the chaotic state of the planet that no efforts are being put forth to clean up the torn remains. Amongst the dwindling imperial forces, being assigned night patrols in the cities away from a base or bunker has come to be thought of as a death sentence. During the shorter light cycles, wave after wave of gaunts are sent forth, as the hive mind knows this will deplete the ammunition stores of the defenders. The planet has long since given up the hope of emerging victorious alone, and has sent communications to local systems, pleading for any sort of aid. With each dreaded dark cycle that comes and passes, however, the planet’s population dwindles, along with its hope for survival.

and now, the models...sorry for the photography, but I have tried a lot of things and I know no one will believe me but a majority of the problem is the camera, before we got a new camera my photography was significantly better

here's the beginning of the swarm...also I have a question, how do people deal with the holes on the backs of the hormogants? green stuff I assume?

Good to see some thought put into the army. I think that's a very unique look, perhaps on a few of the elite you could greenstuff over the eyes and make them alien esque.

I really like that nid colour scheme, I bet it doesn't take too long either?

p.s - did you mix your paints on your thumbnail?

I really like the look so far. However, my only concern is the base. On the test model it seems rather bland, while I understand that is the nature of the army the rather dull-looking base doesn't help (or won't help) add the the overall look of a finished army.

My suggestion would be to go for a brighter, more unusual colour of some alien home world sand or debris. I'm sure a few companies make exotic coloured flock, but I wouldn't want to over do it - keep it subtle.

Nonetheless, I want to see more!

Good scheme, I like the way the eyes stand out. Make it as easy as possible
+ Extra points for having paint all over your fingers, so damn recognisable :p

thanks for the replies, yeah my thumb nail is always covered when I'm done painting, I wondered if that was just me but I guess not...as for the base, I just don't want to make them too complicated for lowly gaunts, on the more important critters I will for sure add more detail to the base

Nice looking swarm of ravenous alien creatures you've got there! i'm guessing by the carapace and colour that they are prone to skulk the underhives and darkened city streets before the main body of nasties attack and devour everyhting in their path?
