Just a question for everyone.
I have seen some really nice red layering by people on this forum and was hoping for some insight.
As it stands now I have been basing with Red Gore, Dry brush blood red, Then layering with ratios of white to Blood red till its almost white. with an adding if red wash half way through
This has been well and good on cloaks/ clothing etc. But it looks odd on skin as in im geting abit more "pinkish" color then I like.

Im just wondering what layering colors people are using to get that final - light red/ light orange look.

Thanks in advance

For my blood angels, I prime with a rustoleum/krylon camo brown, basecoat with Mechrite Red followed by another layer of Red Gore. For highlights, I mix in Blazing Orange and Blood Red. I'd stay away from whites to lighten and it results in pink and not necessarily a lighter red. Here's how it turns out

Hey there, I've got some examples for you with myreds if you like? my first ones I did were my Exorcists, they were mechrite red washed with badab black then highlighted up using red gore and blood red adding more blood red to get highlights then finally adding a touch of blazing orange into the last mix for the final highlights, if you use white in red it turns pink which isn't good so using oranges and yellows will keep it red for you.

the second way i'm doing red now is a really easy method, i've bought the army painter dragon red primer in a can and used that to base the arms for my Marines Exemplar army then once they're on a wash of devlan mud to darken them slightly and highlight with pure blood red and then with a bit of blazing orange in the mix to your desired level, you may need to browse a couple of pages before you get to them in my blog but they're there i promise! :-)

I've kind of settled into this progression for red:

VMC Burnt Cadmium Red blend to
GW Blood Red blend
Shade with Asurmen Blue then blend Blood Red to
VMC Amarantha Red blend to
VMC Amarantha Red + VMC Sunny Skintone (a light peach mix).
Glaze with Baal Red.

Most of the red I paint follows that sort of recipe now. Heavier layering at the top end if I want a lighter finish.
