Hello all,
I am considering getting into WHFB, and was wondering if there is an army that can be Highlanders. I started 40k a couple months ago and enjoy the painting, but my one buddy who'll play wants to play WHFB, so I'll be trying this out as well. Considering I intend to paint all my minis, I've decided I'd like them to be Scottish Highlanders. That all said, i have 2 questions:
1.) Are there even miniatures that represent a Scottish Highlander? I've looked at the Bretonians and they can pull off the knights (i think), but I didnt see infantry that could pull of Scots in kilts.
2.) Which army would best represent them in terms of army composition, Empire, Bretonians, or other?

Thanks

Beast

Bretonnia men at arms look like they are about to get their faces bashed in with a ball and chain by Mel Gibson, so they are out. I dunno, mauraders maybe, with some green stuff kilts and tartans, but they wear pants so maybe not. I believe dwarf is about as close to the highland culture you are going to get, but even that is a bit of a stretch.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Men at Arms - However we never wore armour
Yeoman Horses - We didnt have armoured horses, only the girly English did.
Pike Men - We used those to nullify the Armoured Horses of the Girly English.

That said, why not go for Wood Elves and base them on a Celtic Warband.
The Wardancers are like Celtic Warrior Maidens (tatoos etc.)
Glade Guard - Unarmoured Bowmen etc.
Glade Riders
Eternal guard
The list goes on and they all fit with a Celtic feel.
You could even use the Dryads etc as essentialy we were protecting our lands from the Murderous English.
I might even do that idea myself now...lol
Just paint as normal but try and add a little Tartan here and there although not to much as Tartan was expensive and reserved for the Nobles in large amounts.
Most Scots only wore mooted colour clothes with a little Tartan to identitfy their clan.

Hope this has given you a little food for thought.
Brettonians do represent the Murderous English so they probably would not work.

Maybe surprisingly, Dwarfs are the best Scotish army with almost a complete model range, if you allow non-GW miniatures.
Westwind Dwarf Wars has two versions of standard troops ( http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=1_4&sort=2a&page=2 ), Gamezone has Longbeards and Thunderers with kilts and tammy (plus excellent miners!), GW has Slayers and a beer cart

Pft greenstuff some kilts on these guys and you got some authentic highlanders:

Ermmm, wow, that was incredibly insulting. We ae not a race of 3 foot people that mine all day long.
I think you will find that we actually consume a lot less beer than most other european countries also.
I take it you are not employed as a UN Diplomat.
Maybe best if you do not visit Scotland anytime soon.

No that's Welsh
I am aware that South Americans are not small blue lizards ruled by mighty toads and that Germany is not ruled by Kaiser Karl Franz. But in Fantasy, most Dwarfs speak Scottish dialect, and these are cool miniatures.

Thanks guys! The dwarves, while appearing to fit the bill, have always been a nemesis of mines (my pals fav army to play against me). I may have to overcome that because of the models look great. Any other thoughts?

I think that Dwarf slayers would work really well, with some conversion but Maruaders would be more similar game-wise

As other people have said- Dwarves are your defacto choice for Scots. Avatars of War even came out with a Slayer unit (which I think is pretty cool):

I remember hearing on some podcasts also about a guy who's done the whole individual tartan thing. That would be some brutal, unforgiving free hand.

Also I can confirm that in America, there is few-to-zero evil elves living here.

Speaking as a Scot:

the dwarf idea is great for a Highland army. I think you should do them because the look is fantastic

Lowland Scots (the armies of Wallace, Douglas, Bruce etc) contained some highlanders but were largely blocks of spearmen with support from archers and light armoured horse (sometimes knights). I'm not sure which WHFB army would fit best with that. Empire maybe, painted suitably (ie no plaid or tartan, thankyou...). Like the Scots historically, i think you might win damn few battles though.
