I have 2 packets of these sitting in my room unpainted and I have never painted any of the city stuff released by GW. Can you guys give me some tips on how to paint them well?

Fastest way to paint these kind of things that yields very nice results imo is to (spray)paint them in your mid-tone color of choice, shade them (with a wash for example) and then drybrush the highlight color(s).
You can then paint the details as you see fit. And finally use pigments/paints or whatever you like to weather it.
Alternatively, for a different weathering effect (works very well with rust spots) is to basecoat the whole model in different shades of browns and pigments, spray with hairspray (optionally sprinkle salt over it while hairspray is still wet), (spray)paint your mid-tone color of choice, shade and highlight and then wash the salt off your terrain or wash away some parts of the top layer if you only used hairspray.
There are more extensive tutorials available for the salt/hairspray technique if this (very brief) description is not completely clear.

Thanks man, will have to try it out. Right now im loking at a basecoast of black with codex grey heavy drybrush. Then do heavy drybrush for soil and rubble, then do specific bits such as walls, door ect.

Would that work for larger building as well?

Instead of using a wash, you could just let the basecoat show through. Washes pool on large surfaces like buildings, which doesn't look so good. Personally, I'd prime it black, and drybrush on progressively lighter shades of grey, making sure to leave some of the previous grey/black in the recesses.

^ thats what I am thinking about going for, and then painting things such as the crashed SM bike with stronger, but still faded colours.

I used this for several larger buildings as well for example on a fortress or redemption and a slightly altered imperial bastion.
A picture of the bastion as an example:
This was done by airbrushing the basecoat, washing the whole thing with a cheap black wash (don't waste your expensive GW wash on this) and then drybrushing 2 highlight colors, one went lightly over the whole model, the second one was only used to pick out edges and parts i wanted to stand out more. Afterwards the metals were painted, then all details and finally I weathered the whole thing with pigments, oilpaint and sponging metallics.

Glad you like it, feel free to bug me if you want to know anything else
beside that, Brother SRM makes a valid point regarding washes; if you're not carefull they will pool and look not so good, however you can avoid the worst by thinning your wash. Also, I personally don't mind little bits of pooling, since you can just masque it fairly easy with the first drybrush step and the weathering at the end. Also it can make the building a little more interesting since it can add a bit of character if not too exessive.
