1. That depends on the scheme you're going for, really.
2. Prime and paint the sand along with the miniature; one color and a drybrush will do, and glue the grass on later in small clumps.
3. Highlight them with Mithril Silver, it makes it look like they're gleaming.
4. Some people prime white, wash with a light blue in the recesses, and cover spillover back up. Some people build up from a grey, leaving bits of the previous coat showing with each new grey.
5. Get paint on a brush. Now get most of it off through a napkin or what have you. Run your fairly dry brush over an area over and over again. This is drybrushing.
