On a boat, Trying not to die.

So, I plan on getting about 30 Sternguard for a Crimson Fists army I am making. The thing is, I don't want to buy the near $200 worth of Sternguard that it would take to make my list. Instead, I was wondering:

If I used Tactical marine bodies and Chapterhouse Studios Spartan Heads, would you be OK with this? I would do a bit more conversion work (Bases, Dead Orks, etc)

The photo of the heads would be in the spoiler.

I think it's a fantastic idea, but I would add lots of purity seals and different gubbins to the stock bodies. post a pic when you get some assembled, I've been wanting to see these heads on a SM body.

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies.

I can't see you running into any problems with this, as long as they are WYSIWYG.

I really don't like those Play-Doh-esque heads, but whatever floats your boat. Scibor makes FAR better ones if that's the style you're looking for: http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?group=72

Converting up regular Marines to be Sternguard is totally kosher in my book. Just remember that Crimson Fist vets have both fists painted red, and having special bolters with special ammo boxes looks totally baller.

Not sure what you mean with the "Lump Shoulderpads", mate.

Do you mean the rivets?

I would do the Scibor, but I want the marines to have covered head.

IE I can't paint faces for my life.

You ccooouuuuuuuuuld do the riveted pads, but I would suggest raising the edges on your pauldrons if you are doing those helmets. The appearance together looks better, and its actually a fairly simple thing to do.

Personally, I think the following spike/heresy helmets look better:

Looking at the unpainted greens of the spikey heads, they actually will look better.

And I'll have two spare heads for Tac Sergeants.
