For the purposes of firing....
Can a unit embarked on a transport use the firing points to fire at a different target to the transports weapons?
So can a rhino fire it's combi melta at tank A while the marines inside fire a melta gun at tank B?

Yes. Explicitly covered in te BRB FAQ, and in the definitions of vehicles as separate units to the embarked unit.
They are never one and the same unit. Ever.

Thought so, just wanted to double check. Thank you.
Also, would i be correct in thinking that a model can only fire an assault weapon from a Rhino if it has moved no more than 6".

They can also fire pistols and rapid fire weapons. When the transport moves (up to 6") so do the models inside so they can only fire weapons that can fire after moving (think that only excludes heavy weapons).

Pistols ARE assault weapons.
If a vehicle moves, the passengers inside also count as moving. So you can only fire weapons you are allowed to fire after having moved

Aye, it's probably as frequent as the people who think Fast vehicles have different speed bands than others, or that passengers can fire because their Fast transport can.
